Spring 2015 Undergraduate Career Expo

Hosted by: BBA Career Services and the Undergraduate Career Committee (UCC).
UT ID Card Required for Entry. The Undergraduate Career Expo is for current McCombs School of Business students seeking internships and full-time positions. The career expo is open to current McCombs School of Business students in the BBA, MBA, MPA, MSF, MSBA and MSTC programs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is open to all UT Austin students from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Required Attire: Business Professional. Please see the below Business Professional tab and the complete Business Attire Guide for more information on business professional attire. Students not wearing business professional attire will not be permitted into the expo.
About the Undergraduate Career Expo
The Undergraduate Career Expo (held each fall and spring) is open to current McCombs School of Business students in the BBA, MBA, MPA, MSF, MSBA and MSTC programs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is open to all UT Austin students from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The expo is the largest McCombs School of Business career fair, and it is hosted by the Undergraduate Career Committee and BBA Career Services.
You may be actively looking for employment, or just researching opportunities. The Undergraduate Career Expo is a venue for BBA graduating seniors, MBA, MPA, MSBA, MSF and MSTC students to get face-to-face contact with employers and to learn about full-time opportunities; for sophomores and juniors to learn about networking, possible internships, and industry trends that affect their area of study; for freshmen to learn how to converse with employers, learn about potential career paths, and to become comfortable in a professional environment.
Many employers may also seek the opportunity to connect with you about special leadership programs or conferences.

How to Prepare for the Undergraduate Career Expo
Before the Expo
- Develop a Strong Resume
Highlight your skills and accomplishments. Your resume (see BBA resume template) should be error-free, up-to-date, concise, and graphically pleasing. Print your resume on a laser printer. It looks more professional, and it won't smudge. Don’t forget to make several copies, since most employers will want a copy of your resume. For help with resumes, BBA Career Advisors and Peer Career Advisors are available to help with resume reviews in the BBA Career Services Office during walk-in advising (CBA 2.116).
- Attend the Career Expo Prep Workshop
Wondering how you should prepare and what to do once there? Come to the Career Expo Prep Workshop (January 29, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Legacy Events Room (CBA 3.202). You will get the full details on what to do before, during, and after the expo as well as tips to be successful at the event.
- Study the Companies Attending the Career Expo and the Career Expo Brochure (coming January 2015)
The brochure includes a list of employers recruiting by major and job/internship titles connected to employers’ expo registrations. Identify and research prospective employers. Nothing impresses an employer less than a student asking, “So what do you guys do?” Instead, be one of the few students who knows something about each of the companies. The more informed you are the more likely you will be positively remembered. Develop a list of company specific questions to ask recruiters with those companies in which you are interested.
- Develop a 30-Second Commercial
“Tell me a little about yourself.” You’re likely to get that invitation from many of the employers at the expo. Spend a little time beforehand figuring out your response. Think of your reply as a 30-second commercial for yourself.
- Wear Business Professional Attire
Matching suit required (dark blue, dark grey, or black), professional footwear (no boots), no bright or neon hair color, no visible facial piercings and all men must wear ties. Please see the Business Attire Guide for more information on business professional attire. Students not wearing business professional attire will not be permitted into the expo.
When You Arrive at the Expo
- Get your name badge
At the check-in table, you'll receive a name badge with your major. Name badges should always be worn on your right side.
- Check in your backpack
If you have a backpack, there will be a small area at the expo for students to store their backpacks. Do not bring valuables with you to the expo. Please limit the number of items that you bring with you as space is limited.
- Get a map/booth Listing
A map/booth floor plan and Undergraduate Career Expo brochure will be provided.
During the Expo
- Introduce Yourself and Shake Hands
In many ways, the career expo is a test of your social skills. Employers are almost always friendly and outgoing, and they’ll expect the same of you. Present a smile, a strong handshake, and a positive attitude. First impressions are important. Approach an employer, smile, and offer your hand when you introduce yourself. Four keys to making a good impression include:
- A short introduction using a natural, but forceful voice (especially if you are typically a quiet person; but please, no shouting)
- Strong eye contact
- Firm handshake (not limp, damp, or bone-crushing)
- Gentle smile
- Ask Intelligent Questions
Never underestimate the power of asking insightful questions, especially ones that show that you have done some research.
- Focus on What You Can Offer
You’ll be a refreshing change to most company representatives if you tell them what you can do for them and their organizations instead of asking what they can do for you.
- Obtain Contact Information
Ask the company representatives for their business card so that you can follow up after the expo. If they do not have a business card, ask for their contact information.
- Jot Down Notes
After you talk to multiple companies, you may find it difficult to remember which ones really interested you and which ones you should follow up on. If you wait too long, the conversations will start running together in your head, and you’ll forget what you said to whom. The back of a business card is usually a convenient place to jot down information after you have talked to someone.
- Don't be Afraid to Meet a New Company/Recruiter
If a recruiter is standing by himself or herself, take a chance and go start a conversation. Many students have obtained internships from companies they did not recognize at expo, and you never know what great opportunities may await you.
- Carry the Company Brochures/Freebies in a Bag
Many companies give out small bags during expo, take one for your brochures/giveaways. You will look silly trying to carry around a pile of brochures and freebies.
After the Expo
- Follow Up with Recruiters
Email recruiters you had really good conversations with to thank them for coming to expo and to further express your interest in their company. A small thank-you goes a long way. However, please do not email every recruiter you talked to: they hate spam as much as you do.
- Follow Up on Promises
If, for example, a company representative expressed interest in looking at your website, make sure to email the URL like you said you would.

Preparing for Career Expo is more than pressing your suit and practicing your 30-second introduction. Many students forget an essential piece--researching your target companies. It’s unlikely that you'll know about every company at the event, here are some helpful tools that will help you successfully navigate the Undergraduate Career Expo. Don't forget your UT ID card and professional business attire!
Career Expo Attire
Business professional attire is required for the Undergraduate Career Expo.

Volunteer at the Undergraduate Career Expo
Sign-Up to Volunteer-Must be a McCombs Student
Volunteer sign-up will start January 2015.
Volunteers will be responsible for at least one of the below listed tasks. Volunteers will sign up for their preferred tasks at the mandatory training session: Monday, February 2, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Legacy Events Room (CBA 3.202).
- Answer student and/or recruiter questions
- Assist recruiters for their convenience
- Direct students to specific booths
- Provide recruiters with water and/or food
- Help recruiters find parking
- Provide recruiters with directions to the expo
- Answer questions about campus garage parking
- Help check-in students
- Help check-in expo volunteers
- Set-up or clean up registration materials and tables
- Help recruiters unload items from their vehicles
- Take items/boxes to company booths
- Greet recruiters as they arrive
- Must be committed, enthusiastic, and approachable
- Register online to sign up for up to two one-hour shifts
- Attend one mandatory training session
- Assist recruiters in assigned section with snacks or drinks
- Clean and pick up trash around assigned section before shift is over
- Assist recruiters with questions and directions
- Manage the door, sign-in and volunteer tables
- Willing to help students with name tags

Become an Undergraduate Career Committee (UCC) Member
The Undergraduate Career Committee (UCC) is a student-run organization that plans and executes the Fall and Spring Undergraduate Career Expos as part of BBA Career Services. UCC is now accepting applications!
Apply to be a Member
- The Undergraduate Career Committee (UCC), which is charged with planning and hosting the McCombs Undergraduate Career Expo each semester, has openings for dedicated and diligent new members.
- As a potential member of UCC, you would be responsible for preparing important items to be used on the day of expo, and helping ensure that the expo runs efficiently the day-of, and more! You’ll get an opportunity to interact with company recruiters, learn event management skills, and help make expo run as smoothly as possible. It’s a great way to take leadership and gain great experience managing a large-scale project!

General UCC Responsibilities:
- You must be prompt in communication (phone and email) during both winter and summer breaks. You must also have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- You are required to help with Expo prep on the Friday before the Undergraduate Career Expo.
- You are required to help out for the entire Career Expo on the day of the event.
- We are looking for members who have the time to dedicate to the organization and manage that time effectively.
Student Logistics Manager:
- Design and prepare student brochure
- Coordinate backpack room logistics
- Oversee student check-in process
Employer Logistics Manager:
- Coordinate employer shipping, parking, registration, and decorating services
- Create employer booth layout
- Oversee Undergraduate Career Committee (UCC)
- Manage UCC meetings
- Design and order publicity materials (t-shirts, flyers, and brochures)
- Coordinate promotion/marketing to McCombs students
Human Resources Manager:
- Recruit and train 200+ volunteers
- Coordinate recruiting and training of new UCC members
