Mr. McCombs Pageant 2012
February 10th, 2012
The 2012 Mr.McCombs Pageant was held in the SAC Auditorium on February 10th from 6pm to 8:30pm. Ten candidates, each representing a McCombs Affiliated Student Organization, participated in a competition of swimwear, Q&A, and talent. The event, aimed to unite McCombs organizations to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank and the winner's choice of charity, raised over 4150 canned goods and 750 dollars.
An audience of 450 students rocked the house with their cheers and posters created before the show. Mr.McCombs was truly a night of entertainment and surprises: Jonathan Coneby, Mr.Delta Sigma Pi, proposed to his girlfriend during his acoustic guitar act. With the help of his organization raising over 1300 cans and his passionate dance routine, Mr.Hispanic Business Student Association, Irving Calderon was voted Mr.Congeniality. Mr.Honors Business Association, Jordan Ripley, delivered a comical Powerpoint stand-up routine, and was crowned Mr.McCombs 2012. The proceeds of the show will benefit both the Capital Area Food Bank and Mr.Ripley's choice of charity: the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

FRP Speaker John Allison Informs BBA Students of Business Patents in Infringement
January 24, 2012
On Tuesday, January 24th, the Undergraduate Business Council proudly featured a presentation from distinguished Professor John Allison discussing “Can Changing Procedures Change Legal Outcomes? Patent Litigation and the Internet.”
John R. Allison is the Spence Centennial Professor of Business Administration and a Professor of Intellectual Property in the McCombs School’s Department of Business, Government, & Society. Among other subjects, Professor Allison teaches Intellectual Property Law. For many years, he has conducted empirical studies of the patent system, patenting behavior, patent infringement litigation, and related matters, publishing his results in some of the top law journals in the country. Professor Allison's area of study is intellectual property, and he has dedicated his career to the study of law and how it correlates with business.
During the presentation, Professor Allison showed how his research statistically analyzes the rates at which Internet business method patents were involved in infringement litigation. He also showed how these rates changed throughout the 10 years after they were first granted in large numbers to Internet businesses. His research expands far beyond the frequency of litigation, as he also presented the differences in legal outcomes based on various different categories of patents. Professor Allison's presentation was a huge success and informed McCombs students of topics they don't always get to discuss within business classrooms. We look forward to the next Faculty Research Presentation by Marketing Professor Ty Henderson on Tuesday, February 7th.

Fall Case Competition: ConocoPhillips
November 12, 2011
The Fall 2011 McCombs Case Competition was held this past Saturday, November 12. The competition was comprised of 11 teams, three of which advanced to the finals round.
This year’s case was sponsored byConocoPhillips. The case entailed rebranding and marketing ConocoPhillips' new downstream company, which challenged the teams to come up with a solution that was innovative and viable in today’s environment. The teams spent numerous days developing a variety of solutions, and all their hard work showed in their presentations on Saturday morning. Judges fromConocoPhillips, AT&T and Sense Corp had their work cut out for them. After much deliberation, Arbitrage Capital, comprised of Anisha Sutaria, Carlos Bencomo, Daniel Amin and Seongeun Yoon, took first place; Delta, comprised of David Casso, Lee Wang, Rahul Sangal and Kevin Chiu took second; and Ingenuity, comprised of Angela Morisette, Arthur Wang, Ryan Crestani and Pranitha Patil placed third.
Chaired by Michelle Moon, this event ran smoothly throughout the week and was a great experience for the participants, judges, audience and everyone else involved. We would like to extend a special thanks to the Case Competition Committee- Jenny Feng, Peggy Wang, John Connell and Christie Nguyen, as well as the volunteers of the Undergraduate Business Council and the Office of Student Life without whom this remarkable event would not have been possible.

McCombs Family Weekend
October 22nd, 2011
This year, the Undergraduate Business Council hosted its annual McCombs Family Weekend event at the AT&T Executive Conference Center. We were so excited to have over 450 freshmen students and their parents attend the event on Saturday, October 22.
Selected groups of student panelists shared their experiences regarding internships, career services, and studying abroad. Student speakers even told stories ranging from interning in New York at a Fortune 500 company, to spending an entire semester studying International Business in Paris. Four esteemed faculty members also came to speak on behalf of the incredible professors that teach at McCombs. Professor Leeds and Professor Duvic (both teachers in the Finance Department), Professor May (former Dean of the business school and current teacher in the Accounting Department), and Professor Pederson (teacher in the Business, Government, and Society Department) all were present to speak to students and their families. They discussed tips for students entering into their classes at McCombs, including skills they are expected to have and skills they can expect to attain over time. They also emphasized the importance of being able to apply classroom material to real-world situations. Most importantly, though, they stressed that getting to know your professors can open doors for you, especially since most professors have had experiences at various professional companies before their careers in academia.
Overall, the McCombs Family Weekend was a great success for all of those involved. The program would not have been possible without the help of volunteers from the Undergraduate Business Council and The Office of Student Life. The event was a true hit, and we look forward to the many successful future family weekends to come.

Alumni
Greetings from 2011-2012 Alumni Business Council Chairs:
Howdy Business Council Alumni,
We hope all of you are enjoying this new year. We, and all of Business Council, are really looking forward to a Spring Semester chock-full of Alumni interaction!
In the spirit of UBC, we thought we’d briefly highlight a few of last semester’s happenings below.
UBC started the semester off stronger than ever with record attendance for our first VIP of the 2011-2012 year, the president of ESPN since 1998, George Bodenheimer. Not long after, the Longhorn Network also announced its coverage of the VIP speaker series from Fall 2011 onward.
Company Field Trip (CFT), our program which gives McCombs students the opportunity to experience companies first-hand with a visit to their respective offices, expanded for the 2011-2012 school year, taking students from McCombs all the way to New York City and San Francisco.
UBC has also taken great strides to increase the degree of student input in the curriculum-setting and registration processes through the newly created Curriculum Ad-hoc committee.
More opportunities for Alumni involvement with UBC are also coming with the 2012 Spring Semester. We are in the process of organizing events outside the business school that will allow Alumni to interact with current members. The details will be included the newsletter you’ll be receiving shortly so keep an eye out.
In a similar vein, UBC has worked with the powers that be within McCombs to make donating to Council more direct and easier than ever. If you wish to donate, simply click Donate to Council Tax Exempt here or to the right under Johnny Cool and select “Undergraduate Business Council” in the drop-down menu.
If you haven’t already, please take a minute to update your contact information with our alumni form: Update Contact Information.
Lastly, if you should have any questions or wish to get more involved with council, please email us at UBCABCchair@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Casey Sherley and Bhargav Srinivasan

A Message from our President:
Greetings, UBC Alumni!
I hope this message finds you doing well and enjoying life in whatever part of the globe you call home. Here on the 40 Acres, the 2011-2012 Undergraduate Business Council is busy building on the great work of our predecessors as we serve the 4,400 undergraduate students in the McCombs School of Business.
Over the past several months, our members have taken ownership of this organization and done incredible work to better the McCombs School of Business. Because of their passion and dedication, the programs you helped build have never been stronger. From organizing the college’s most successful McCombs Kickoff ever to hosting VIP Speakers like ESPN President George Bodenheimer and Southwest CEO Gary Kelly, UBC continues to provide unmatched opportunities for student development.
In addition to our extensive programming, UBC has been hard at work collaborating with the McCombs and University administrations. Since May, we’ve worked closely with Dean Gilligan, Associate Dean Murray, and Assistant Dean Allert to reform the undergraduate curriculum and streamline the registration process. We’ve collaborated with Dean Gilligan and Associate Dean Newman to ensure that college-level budget cuts are done in a thoughtful and strategic way. We’ve partnered with the Career Services Department to increase opportunities for professional development. We’ve joined forces with the McCombs Alumni Relations Office to revamp and improve the BBA Legacy Campaign. And we’ve worked with the university provost to tackle issues like four-year graduation rates, alumni engagement, and academic integrity.
Needless to say, it’s an exciting time to be in Business Council. I’m unbelievably proud of the great work our members are doing to expand UBC’s reach and enhance our existing programs. I’m thankful every day for the opportunity to work with such wonderful people.
In closing, allow me to say thank you for your incredible support of our organization. You certainly set the bar very high for this organization, and we’re working day in and day out to meet and exceed those expectations. With your continued support and involvement, we will carry on UBC’s long tradition of serving McCombs students and improving the University.
Hook ‘em,
Michael Daehne

Special Thanks to Our Corporate Sponsors
Dear Sponsors,
On behalf of the Undergraduate Business Council and the 4,400 undergraduate students at McCombs, I want to thank you for your continued support of our organization. UBC’s purpose is unique, and its successes unparalleled. As the official representative body of the McCombs School and the umbrella organization for all McCombs student organizations, UBC is charged with the unique task of both representing students and hosting valuable events for those students. Year after year, we do just that.
With events ranging from the VIP Speaker Series and McCombs Executive Summit to McCombs Kickoff and Faculty Research Presentations, our programs are as diverse and distinguished as our 101 members. Through these events and the rest of our 50 programs, we reach more students more effectively than any other organization at UT-Austin. Simply put, UBC is the heart of the McCombs School of Business, and you are the lifeblood of our organization.
With your help, we can continue to improve the educational experience of all McCombs undergraduates while exposing these bright and talented students to the tremendous career opportunities at your firm.
