McCombs Career Services | Offer Guidelines

Make an Offer

Students are eager to learn about recruiting outcomes, whether positive or negative; please keep candidates advised of the interview outcome as soon as possible. If you are conducting interviews using a “pre-select” process, please convert all students from “pending” to the appropriate status in our On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) system: “Not Invited,” “Invited,” or “Alternate.” If you need guidance with this process, contact your recruitment account manager.

McCombs Career Services Employer Expectations

We expect all companies to evaluate candidates without consideration of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability or veteran status.  "Exploding offers" or pressure from companies to accept an offer "on the spot" or within an unreasonably short time frame are considered violations of the McCombs School of Business Recruiting Guidelines.  Just as we expect students not to renege on offers, we expect companies not to withdraw or rescind an offer to a student.  For complete details on offer timelines, see the 'Offer Period Duration' and 'Full-Time and Intern Offers' tabs on this page.

Employers that misrepresent employment opportunities to students will risk losing access or privileges to McCombs Career Services recruiting resources.  McCombs Career Services cannot indemnify employers from employment liability.

If a student accepts a written offer of employment and later rescinds on the acceptance, please immediately notify the appropriate program's career services director (Velma Arney - BBA, Jim Franklin - MPA, or Stacey Rudnick - MBA).  McCombs Career Services recognizes the importance of integrity in accepting an offer and want the opportunity to follow up with the candidate. The McCombs School of Business has provisions to penalize students and remove recruiting privileges when these circumstances arise.

Offer Period Duration

All offers must be in writing.  The start of the required offer timeline is determined by the date of the written offer letter. We request that employers notify the appropriate Career Services program office once students have accepted an offer.

While we ask students to notify organizations of their decisions as soon as possible, we also have offer deadlines in place to ensure that students have an opportunity to make thoughtful decisions.  For complete details on our full-time and internship offer periods, see the Full-Time and Intern Offers tab on this page.

Exploding Offers

McCombs Career Services prohibits “exploding offers."  An exploding offer requires a student to accept a job offer within a very short period of time or face having the offer rescinded or base salary markedly diminished. This places undue pressure on a student, and as such, is viewed as inappropriate conduct. Requiring a verbal acceptance in order to receive a written offer is considered an "exploding offer."

Withdrawing an Offer

We strongly discourage any employer from withdrawing offers or substantially altering base compensation. This action could seriously damage a company's reputation and recruiting effectiveness at the McCombs School of Business. If you must rescind an offer, please contact the appropriate program's career services Director (Velma Arney - BBA, Jim Franklin - MPA, or Stacey Rudnick - MBA) prior to that action so that we can assist you in this difficult situation.
