Brewster McCracken

McCracken Head ShotBrewster McCracken is the founder and executive director of Pecan Street Inc. He was the lead author of the organization’s successful federal stimulus application and was the driving force behind the organization’s evolution from its informal collaboration in 2008 to its status as one of the country’s leading smart grid research and development organizations.

Brewster was elected to two terms on the Austin City Council (elected at large) and served as the council’s mayor pro tem until 2009. Through his elected position, he also served as a board member for Austin Energy, the nation’s fourth largest municipally owned utility. In 2007, he made Austin Energy the first utility in the nation to open its grid for emerging clean energy companies to beta test their technologies. He graduated with honors from Princeton University and The University of Texas School of Law and holds a master’s degree from the LBJ School.

Brewster is married to Sarah McCracken, the programs manager at the LBJ Library.
