When is the "Right" Time to Adopt New Technology?

April 22, 2010

Professor of Finance Sheridan Titman took to his blog this week to discuss something that every technology consumer faces: if and when does it make sense to "adopt" new technology? On one hand, for technologies that promise to reduce your long term living costs (think energy-efficient appliances or even a simple improvement on a light bulb) if you put it off the upgrade, you are essentially forgoing those savings. On the other hand, if you wait, the price tends to be better (sometimes much better) and the technology is often also a bit better. He also ties his analysis into the role of government in incentivizing technologies that benefit society.
