Maymester in Portugal: International Perspectives on Design

BME 320, CHE 379, ME 379M (Unique Numbers: TBA)

Run by the International Engineering Education in the Cockrell School of Engineering, this program satisfies the upper-division elective credit for the Business of Healthcare Certificate Program! 

Students learn to consider socio-technical factors in designing clinically translatable solutions using human-centered design methods to understand the people and issues and identify actionable problem statements. 

The Maymester 2019 course focuses on designing health information systems for supporting medical decision-making, exploring the impact of culture on health care delivery, and designing health care technologies through comparisons of Portugal and the United States.  

This course is open to all majors, with no prerequisites, and requires no math or physics background, even though it is offered in the Cockrell School. It carries a Global Cultures flag and has no prerequisites.

Semester Plus in Sydney, Australia

Equivalency: N309: Global Health

Open to all majors, this unique program allows students to explore culture, health care systems, and global health concepts of the US, Australia, and the world, while earning credit for N309 and up to 16 hours from the world-renowned University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia. Visit Global Texas for information or contact Study Abroad.

MD Anderson Revenue Cycle (Summer)

Application: September – distributed to BofH student mailing list
Eligibility: BofH students who have completed or are enrolled in MAN334M Healthcare Systems Management and who will not graduate before completion
Length: 12 weeks; 40 hours/wk – late May through  late August
Pay: $6,000 (1/2 paid at beginning of internship; ½ paid after completion)

 

MD Anderson’s Access and Revenue Cycle internship program aims to develop generations of talented leaders in the healthcare industry. We understand the value of educational and professional aspirations. Our program offers a customized curriculum that will expose interns to the major functional areas across MD Anderson as well as acquaint them with organizational metrics that are critical to the sustainability of many hospitals and clinics. We will make every effort to align intern interests with a diverse and dynamic experience. We want to offer intensive training where interns can apply their strengths learned in the academic setting to their professional development.

The Access and Revenue Cycle Internship Program consists of a variety of educational experiences. Each area can offer rotations through various functions over a three-month period.

Ascension Seton Academic Administration Internship (Fall, Spring, Summer)

Eligibility: BofH students who have completed or are enrolled in MAN334M Healthcare Systems Management and OM334M Healthcare Operations Management (grade B or better); GPA 3.25 or higher
Length: Summer: 8 weeks; 20 hours/week (Flexible 5 days off)
Fall: 16 weeks; 10 hours/week (Thanksgiving week off)
Spring: 16 weeks; 10 hours/week (Spring break off)
Pay: $12/hour

 

Job Summary

The Academic Administrative Intern will facilitate, analyze, process, document and review projects through their lifecycle.

 

Learning Objectives

  • To provide an understanding of administrative and operational functions in the healthcare environment
  • To enhance knowledge of healthcare regulatory and compliance requirements
  • To expand critical thinking skills for problem solving, decision making and process improvement

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist Program Managers in automating administrative functions and processes
  • Assist with documentation of policies and procedures
  • Communicate project status, timeline and project risks
  • Support leads with data analysis and reporting
  • Document program and project timelines and provide recommendations for improvement
  • Prepare internal and external communications
  • Facilitate preliminary contract workflows
  • Aid in the content development of department website
  • Provide support with onboarding and screening for various programs

Dell Medical School Health Leadership Apprentice Program

Open to undergraduate and graduate students; this 10-week apprentice program gives aspiring health care leaders a unique experience working in a health system devoted to transforming the way people get and stay healthy. Internships are available every semester, including summer.

Child Inc.

Assistance is needed with budgeting (primarily data entry), but the volunteer will gain hands-on experience with a complex accounting information system. The volunteer will be under the direct supervision of the Finance Department Head. No prior experience is necessary other than basic computer experience. Training will be provided.
