What is it?
The Business & Public Policy (BPP) Certificate is UT’s newest undergraduate certificate. Offered by the Business, Government & Society Department (BGS) of the McCombs School of Business, the certificate is open to all UT undergraduates—business and non-business.
What is it about?
Any business person quickly realizes that governments, regulators, and other constituencies (communities, NGOs, customers, etc.) have a huge impact on commercial activity. And much of governmental activity aims to facilitate, channel, and constrain business. What happens at the intersection of these two worlds, then, is of great importance to a broad range of careers.
Who should be interested?
All students interested in careers in business, politics, law, government service, or NGOs would increase their capabilities by taking the courses required for the Certificate and improve their credentials by earning adding the BPP Certificate to their transcripts.
How do we sign up?
Students who have completed 24 hours in residence with upper division standing may formally apply to the BPP Certificate Program. Admission to the program is based on students’ overall academic record. To gain admission the following semester, students must apply by March 1 for fall and by October 1 for spring, although extensions may be granted. The application form is located under the the "Admissions" tab on the left.
What classes are required?
The BPP requires 18 semester hours of coursework.
Students must take GOV 312L. One option for this course is the Washington Campus version of the course, which is offered every spring.
In addition, students must take at least three of the following four BGS courses:
- BGS 371 - Corporate Political Strategy
- BGS 372 - Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility
- BGS 373 - Strategic Corporate Communication
- BGS 374 – Global Political Economy
If students have taken all five of the courses listed above, then they need take only one additional approved elective. However, if they have taken only four of the required courses, then they must take two approved electives. The approved electives are listed on the curriculum page of this website.
How long does it take/how long do I have to complete the certificate?
The 18 hours of Business & Public Policy Certificate courses usually require at least two long semesters to complete due to course availability and sequencing. Students have up to one year following graduation to complete the requirements and receive transcript certification.
What if I have already completed some of the electives? Do I have to retake them?
No. If you already have credit for BPP electives taken at UT Austin (UT Extensions included) you do not need to retake them after being accepted into the certificate program.
