Prabhudev Konana portraitProfessor Prabhudev Konana named chair of IROM Department

Effective September 1, 2011, Prabhudev Konana was appointed chair of the IROM department. In his role as Professor of Information Management, Konana is a Dinstinguished Teaching Professor & William H. Seay Centennial Professor of Business in the Department of Information Risk and Operations Management (IROM).  Taking on his role as IM Program Director is Professor Sirkka Javenpaa. When Konana become chair, he was inspired to reconnect with Alumni of the MIS program. In his welcome letter, Prabhudev shares the energizing changes happening in the IM Program.

"We are in an exciting time period, with remarkable innovations in business analytics, social networks, mobile devices, platform-based computing, cloud computing, crowd sourcing, and outsourcing/offshoring. These are fundamentally altering what, why and how we teach in the MIS curriculum."

After 18 years, Senior Lecturer Elota Patton retires

Elota Patton teachingCurrently teaching MIS 301, Senior Lecturer Elota Patton's goal is to get students energized about MIS.  She is active in the IM Program, and has co-created, directed and promoted many events, including the MIS Career Networking Event, the IM Speaker Series, IM30, the IM Entrepreneurship Celebration, MIS Steering Committee meetings, the McCombs Next Top Major Event, and the BizIT Case Competition. In a recent article she wrote on her years at UT, "18 Years of Learning." Patton states, "People become teachers because they have an undeniable urge to learn and to share what they learn." In the months leading up to her retirement, Patton is also spearheading the $100K Challenge for MIS Innovation, with the end goal of generating enough funds to support one lecturer to teach one new and innovative elective per academic year.  This investment will enable exploration of leading-edge content for the MIS BBA curriculum.

Sirkka Jarvenpaa New Director of the IM Program

As Dr. Prabhudev Konana steps in as Chairman of the IROM Department, IROM Professor Sirkka Jarvenpaa takes over the positon of Director of the IM Program. Jarvenpaa received her B.S. from Bowling Green State University and her M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Her courses include Managing Innovation in a Gobal Economy and Research in Information Systems. Her research and teaching interests include global information technology, group and organizational decision support systems, and strategic use of information technology.

IM Entrepreneurship Event

The IM Program will host an all-day symposium celebrating our IM BBA and MBA alumni entrepreneurs. Held at the UT Alumni Center, the event will feature four "Furture Talks" from successful entrepreneurs (much like TED talks) on topics such as Mobile Applecations and Entrapreneurship, Entrepreneurship Through Analytics, Social Entrepreneurship, and Innovationg with University Startups.  Join us Friday, April 20, 2012.

MIS Steering Committee Meeting

The Steering Committee is a consortium of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and industry partners. They meet annually to discuss the future of the MIS Program. The meeting will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012, in the Legacy Events room from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m,, with a happy hour following at Scholz's.

Career Networking

MIS BBA Career Networking / Speed Dating event

MIS students gathered in the CBA Event Room Wednesday evening, Oct 12, to mix and mingle with recruiting companies. With nine companies in attendance, including Accenture, ConocoPhillips, PwC, Credera, Pariveda, and HP, students were given the opportunity to converse on many topics with a variety of representatives. Students gained a broader understanding of workplace expectations, and companies had access to the 70 potential interns and employees.

Rick Byars and the "Killer K" Class

MIS 333K, Business Web Development, is one of the toughest classes in the MIS major. It culminates with an intensive six-week, team Web development project.  Many students say the K project is the most challenging assignment of their college careers.   The class, currently being taught by Rick Byars, is designed to teach students how to develop custom Web applications in today's business world.
