Alumni Spotlight

We love sharing the interesting things our Alumni are doing in the world in our Alumni Spotlight. The two MIS graduates we talked to this semester are Tommy Schindler (class of '09) and Jackie Flores (class of '13).

Jackie Flores

Jackie FloresI am an associate at PwC here in Austin working for the Risk Assurance group doing IT audits. I was one of the lucky ones that got to stay here in Austin!

MIS gave me the foundation to begin understanding the IT environments of the clients I work for. A lot of the knowledge I use came from on-the-job training however, without the solid MIS background that I got at UT, I wouldn't have been able to grasp the concepts that I need to perform my job on a daily basis. The beauty of having this background and working as an auditor allows me to serve as the interpreter between IT and accounting. Being able to have that knowledge is a very powerful tool and is only going to continue to help me in the long run. Also, MIS365 and MIS374 were the BEST classes I took as an MIS major. A lot of what I learned in those classes applies to my job so I really understand the value of those classes now that I am working.

By far, one of the best UT memories was my freshman year when we won the Big 12 championship and we all walked to the main mall to take pictures with the lit tower. Everyone was out, cheering, honking their horns and going wild. For McCombs it was turning in my MIS333K project and that entire experience with my amazing team. Passing 333K is such a milestone for any MIS major so it was definitely something I celebrated.

I graduated in 2009 with a degree in MIS and was lucky enough to find Hitachi Consulting. If you think you would enjoy working on fast-paced projects in exciting industries, then consulting is for you. I was told prior to starting that working in consulting is very similar to receiving a master’s degree. I have found this to be true.

Hitachi Consulting has a program called the Consulting Core that all new hires must go through before specializing or focusing on a practice. The Core allowed me to gain a broad technical skill-set while building my core consulting skills.  All the while I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the top technologists in the country.  There is no better way to learn!  But to me the thing that really sets Hitachi Consulting apart is the culture and the people.  Here my colleagues are also my close friends.  Please find me on LinkedIn if you want to know more about consulting or Hitachi Consulting!
