The Alternative Investments Conference is a unique event which is designed to facilitate interaction between alternative investment managers, investors, faculty and students. The conference will feature a keynote speaker and four panel discussions addressing issues relating to Private Equity, Natural Resource Investments, Hedge Fund and Real Estate Investments. It will also provide opportunities for informal discussions and networking among conference attendees.

Greg Jensen headshotGreg joined Bridgewater in 1996 as an undergraduate from Dartmouth College, where he majored in Economics and Applied Mathematics.  As Co-CIO, he directs BW’s research efforts and oversees the development and execution of proprietary investment strategies. 

Greg is also CEO, reporting into BW’s Management Committee, where he is working closely with founder Ray Dalio and other senior leaders to strengthen the firm’s culture and infrastructure.In 2010 and 2011, Greg was named one of business’s notable rising stars in Fortune Magazine’s 40 under 40. 

Bridgewater

Bridgewater manages approximately $120 billion in global investments for a wide array of institutional clients, including foreign governments and central banks, corporate and public pension funds, university endowments and charitable foundations. Approximately 1,200 people work at Bridgewater, which is based in Westport, Connecticut.

  • Kyle Bass
    Managing Partner, Hayman Capital Management L.P
    Kyle Bass Head ShotMr. Bass is the managing partner of Hayman Capital Management L.P., an SEC registered investment adviser, which he founded in December 2005. Hayman Capital Management provides investment management services to managed accounts and investment partnerships, including the Hayman Capital Master Fund, L.P., Japan Macro Opportunities Master Fund, L.P., and Hayman Mortgage Credit Master Fund, L.P. Previously, Mr. Bass co-managed the Subprime Credit Strategies Fund, L.P. and Subprime Credit Strategies Fund II, L.P., which took short positions against the subprime mortgage market.

    Mr. Bass is a member of the board of directors of The University of Texas Investment Management Co. (UTIMCO), which has aggregate assets of over $26 billion. Mr. Bass is a founding member of the Serengeti Asset Management Advisory Board and serves on the board of directors of the Troops First Foundation, Business Executives for National Security, and Texas Ranger Association Foundation. In addition, Mr. Bass is a member of the Advisory Council of the Comeback America Initiative, which is dedicated to promoting fiscal responsibility and sustainability. Mr. Bass has testified as an expert witness before the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate and Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission.

    Prior to forming Hayman Capital Management, Mr. Bass was a managing director at Legg Mason, Inc. and a senior managing director at Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc. Mr. Bass graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Real Estate Finance from Texas Christian University in May 1992.
  • Christopher Casey
    Institutional Portfolio Manager, Franklin Templeton Real Asset Advisors
    Chris CaseyChris Casey joined Franklin Templeton in 2012. As a part of the Franklin Templeton Real Asset Advisors' investment team, Mr. Casey is responsible for communicating the products, capabilities and expertise of the private real estate, infrastructure and real estate securities groups both to and through the firm's global distribution channels. On the real resources front and prior to joining Franklin Templeton, Mr. Casey was a chief operating officer of Post Oak Energy Capital, a Houston based oil and gas private equity firm. Before that, Mr. Casey was a managing director at AIG Global Real Estate responsible for raising capital for their global property funds, and at Forum Partners, where he was responsible for capital placement and investor relations for Forum's Asian and European real estate funds. Prior to Forum Partners, Mr. Casey held positions with Lehman Brothers, Inc. and Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc. Mr. Casey received a B.S. degree from Washington and Lee University, an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a master's of management degree from the University of Dallas. He holds FINRA Series 7, 24 and 63 licenses.
  • Claudia Faust
    Founder/Managing Partner, Hawkeye Partners, LP  
    Claudia Faust headshotMs. Faust is a co-founder and managing partner of Hawkeye Partners and serves as chairperson of the firm's board of advisors and management committee. Ms. Faust has primary responsibility for the execution of the firm's investment management programs.

    Prior to Hawkeye Partners, Ms. Faust was a principal at Pension Consulting Alliance, Inc. ("PCA"). During her nine year tenure at PCA, she focused on industry research, portfolio strategy, manager searches and due diligence, transaction structuring and investment management on behalf of PCA's discretionary institutional real estate clients. Ms. Faust was also responsible for PCA's non-consulting initiatives, which included the acquisition of RREEF by Deutsche Bank in 2002 and the acquisition by institutional investors of certain Deutsche Bank interests in a multi-billion dollar portfolio of high yield global real estate investments in 2003.
  • Ron Hulme
    Chief Executive Officer, Parallel Resource Partners 
    AIC Ron HulmeRon Hulme is the CEO of Parallel Resource Partners, an oil- and gas-focused private equity firm. From late 2008 until early 2011, Ron served as the Chief Executive Officer of Carlson Capital, a $6 billion AUM multi-strategy hedge fund and a co-sponsor, along with Bluescape Resources, of Parallel Resource Partners. Upon assuming his duties at Parallel Resource Partners, Ron stepped down from his CEO role at Carlson and became vice chairman of the firm.

    Prior to joining Carlson, Ron completed a 26-year career with McKinsey & Co. where he served many industry leading energy and private equity clients. Ron led several of McKinsey’s Practice Groups, including the Global Corporate Finance Practice, the Global Risk Practice, the Global Strategy Practice, the Americas Oil and Gas Practice, and the Houston office. Ron was also an active leader in McKinsey’s internal governance, having served in the Office of the Managing Director where he oversaw McKinsey’s six functional practices and as a member of the firm’s shareholders council (the firm’s elected board).

    Ron earned a BBA degree from the University of Texas and an MBA degree from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar. He is an active board member of several non-profit organizations including Texas Children’s Hospital (Board President), the Alley Theatre, the University of Texas Energy Institute, the UT McCombs School of Business Advisory Council, and the UT Energy Management and Innovation Center.
  • Greg Jensen
    Co-CEO and Co-CIO, Bridgewater 

    Greg Jensen headshotGreg Jensen joined Bridgewater Associates, the world's biggest hedge fund firm, as an intern. At age 37, Jensen is now one of Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio's most trusted lieutenants. He is both a co-chief executive officer and a co-chief investment officer of the firm. A graduate of Dartmouth College, where he majored in economics and applied math, Jensen oversees Bridgewater's research and trading departments.


     

     

  • Zac McCarroll
    Director, University of Texas Investment Management Company

    Zac headshotZac McCarroll serves as Director of Natural Resources Investments and Infrastructure for the University of Texas Investment Management Company (UTIMCO) which manages the $26 billion University of Texas endowments and associated funds. He is also a member of UTIMCO’s Portfolio Position Task Force responsible for implementing hedging and risk management positions related to strategic investment themes and broad portfolio exposure. Mr. McCarroll is responsible for the endowments’ global natural resources and infrastructure investments in direct, private equity, hedge fund, public equity, and commodity future investments and sits on the advisory board of numerous fund relationships.

    Mr. McCarroll received an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a BBA from the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business. Mr. McCarroll is a CFA Charterholder.

  • Scott Nyquist
    Director, McKinsey & Company
    Scott Nyquist headshotScott Nyquist is global co-leader of McKinsey's Sustainability & Resource Productivity Practice and a leader of the global Energy Practice. Based in Houston, he works primarily with energy and industrial companies to develop strategies for performance transformation and to capture opportunities in energy efficiency, wind, solar, biofuels, and natural gas.
    A chemical engineer by training, Scott joined McKinsey in 1984. Among recent work, he has helped a US electric utility adapt its operations and community infrastructure to increasing climate risks; guided a national oil company in developing a long-term strategy to navigate increasing resource scarcity and environmental pressure; supported an independent oil company in building a gas business and improving its global exploration effectiveness; and advised a large industrial company on building new businesses in a world of growing energy demand and increasing environmental scrutiny.
  • Keith Oden
    Principal Executive Officer and Director, Camden Property Trust 
    Keith OdenKeith Oden was co-founder of Camden's predecessor companies in 1982 and has served Camden as President and Trust Manager since 1993. As a Principal Executive Officer and Director, Oden drives Camden's strategic initiatives, leads the property operations and corporate support services, and promotes the company's culture.
    After completing his MBA from The University of Texas at Austin, Oden began his career as a management consultant with the then-public accounting firm Deloitte, Haskins and Sells in 1979. He joined Century Development Corporation, one of the most active real estate development firms in the Southwest in 1981, and later became Director of Financial Planning.
    For more than twenty years, Mr. Oden has been committed to developing one of the best multifamily companies in the industry. Under his purview, Camden successfully completed the mergers of three well-established real estate companies: Paragon, Oasis Residential, and Summit Properties. Oden's work was instrumental to the assimilation of these three companies into Camden's culture.
  • Larry C. Oldham
    President & CEO, Parallel Petroleum LLC

    Oldham Head ShotLarry C. Oldham is President and CEO of Parallel Petroleum LLC, an independent energy company headquartered in Midland, Texas, which is engaged in the acquisition, development and production of long-lived oil and natural gas properties, primarily in the Permian Basin. Mr. Oldham founded Parallel Petroleum Corporation in 1979, took the company public in 1980, and served as an officer and director of the corporation until it was acquired thirty years later by Apollo Global Management in December 2009. Apollo sold the company two years later in December 2011 to Samsung C&T Corporation. Under Apollo’s ownership and now under Samsung’s ownership, Parallel Petroleum LLC has maintained its footprint in the Permian Basin, its commitment to expansion and growth, and its management team and employees. Mr. Oldham continues to lead Parallel Petroleum as a Director, President and Chief Executive Officer. Before Parallel's formation, Mr. Oldham was employed by Dorchester Gas Corporation from 1976 to 1979 and KPMG Peat Marwick, LLP during 1975 and 1976.

  • Coburn Packard
    Principal, Apollo Global Real Estate 

    Coburn Packard headshotMr. Packard joined Apollo in September 2010 from Ridgeline Capital Group, where he was a partner leading the firm’s investment activities.  Previously, Mr. Packard spent ten years with Lehman Brothers Real Estate Private Equity, where as a senior principal he was responsible for equity investments throughout the Americas.  Mr. Packard was previously a member of Lehman Brothers' Real Estate Investment Banking group.  Mr. Packard is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the Yale Real Estate Alumni Association board of directors and earned a B.A. in Ethics, Politics and Economics from Yale University.

     

     

  • Puon Penn
    Head of National Cleantech and Emerging Tech Markets, Wells Fargo

    Puon Penn Head ShotPuon Penn is a senior vice president and head of the National CleanTech & Emerging Tech Markets sector at Wells Fargo. Based in Palo Alto, Calif., he manages a team of banking professionals who serve the financial needs of businesses in technology and clean technology nationwide. The Wells Fargo CleanTech Group provides expertise, financial services, and resources to help domestic and international companies focus on decreasing the use of fossil fuels, fertilizers, industrial chemicals, and other activities that cause greenhouse gas emissions or other harmful environmental effects.

    Puon began his career with Wells Fargo in 1998 in the International Group as a structured trade finance officer. He moved on to become a senior relationship manager in the commercial banking group, serving the financial needs of middle-market companies. In 2003, Puon joined the Wells Fargo Principal Investing Group as a buy-side analyst covering the food and beverage, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, and financial services sectors. In 2006, Puon joined the Wells Fargo Technology & Venture Banking management team.

    Wells Fargo has committed more than $1.5 billion to more than 130 customers who have made environmentally beneficial products and services a key part of their businesses. In addition, Wells Fargo has deployed more than $2.1 billion of tax equity capital into more than 250 renewable energy projects in the United States including $500 million to support more than 200 commercial-scale solar photovoltaic projects and $1.5 billion for 30 utility-scale wind projects. At yearend 2010, Wells Fargo has provided more than $3.7 billion in financing for building projects designed to qualify for the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification.

    Puon earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Reed College in Portland, Ore., and his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. Active in the community, Puon is involved with several nonprofit organizations including the Cambodian Children’s Fund and Friends Without a Border.

  • Richard Perry
    Chief Executive Officer, Perry Corp.

    Richard Perry Head ShotRichard has been CEO of Perry Corp. since 1988. Prior to 1988, Richard was in the equity arbitrage area of Goldman, Sachs & Co. He was also an adjunct associate professor at the Stern School of Business at New York University, where he taught a course in the finance department. Richard serves on the board of directors of Capital Business Credit LLC, Universal American Corp., Ovation LLC and Northwest Investments LLC. He is also chairman of the board of Barneys New York Inc. Richard is a member of the boards of trustees of Facing History and Ourselves, The Israel Project and the University of Pennsylvania. He is also on the Advisory Council of the Hamilton Project. Richard earned an MBA at New York University’s Stern School of Business in 1980, and a BS at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1977.

  • Neil Randall
    Director, Teacher Retirement System of Texas

    Neil Randall headshotNeil Randall is a Director in the Private Equity Group at the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. He has primary responsibility for the group’s $5 billion large buyout portfolio and assists in the strategy and development of the venture/growth, credit, and mid/small buyout portfolios. Prior to joining TRS in 2007, Neil was an associate at Convergent Investors, an Austin-based venture capital firm. At Convergent, he focused on evaluating new investments as well as portfolio management, which included a secondment as Director of Business Development to one of its portfolio companies, TeraVicta Technologies. Previously, he also worked in the Enterprise Systems Group at Dell and the financial advisory services at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He received a BBA and MS, Finance from Texas A&M University.

     

     

  • Rakesh Wilson
    Principal, Apollo Management

    RWilsonMr. Wilson joined Apollo Management in 2009, where he is currently a senior member of the natural resources team. Prior to joining Apollo Management, Mr. Wilson was at Morgan Stanley’s Commodities Department in the principal investing group responsible for generating, evaluating and executing investment ideas across the energy sector with deals including Wellbore Capital and Helios Energy/Royalty Partners. Mr. Wilson began his career at Goldman Sachs in equity research and then moved to its investment banking division in New York and Asia. Mr. Wilson currently serves on the boards of directors of Athlon Energy, Talos Energy and EP Energy and previously served as a director of Parallel Petroleum. Mr. Wilson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and received his MBA from INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France. He has also taught business courses at universities in China.
