Step 1: Obtain a Passport and a Visa
All students studying abroad will be required to have a valid passport before requesting a student visa and/or residency permit to enter the host country. Students can obtain or renew a passport at McCombs’ Passport Day or by stopping by the UT International Office, Passport and ID Services.
Additionally, students must obtain a student visa and/or residency permit to enter the host country. Important documents, instructions and deadlines for obtaining a visa can be found on the BBA International Programs Blackboard Community.
Step 2: Read Host School and Housing Information
Accepted students should access Blackboard soon after their acceptance into a BBA exchange program to read the important documents, instructions and deadlines regarding the host school application, housing application (if applicable), course registration information, host school orientation dates.
Step 3: Attend Mandatory Preparatory Meetings

This is an opportunity for accepted students to meet and socialize with the other McCombs students going to your host school, McCombs students who have already been there, as well as international exchange students from your host school who are currently at UT. All of these people are great resources to help you prepare! Light refreshments provided.
Preparatory workshop covering information on health, safety, academic differences, culture shock, and transferring course credits. Light refreshments provided.

Step 4: Complete Required Forms and Online Orientation Modules
Accepted students must enter the Study Abroad Portal also known as “My SAO” to access forms and online orientation modules required by the UT Study Abroad Office. Unless otherwise noted on the portal, forms and orientation modules found are due by May 1 for summer students, June 15 for fall students and December 1 for spring students.
- All Programs Administrative Orientation: covers passport, visa, health, financial aid, travel, money, SOS, insurance.
- BBA Administrative Orientation: covers UT registration instructions, credit, grades, internship, BBA Career Services, forms, graduation, insurance, withdrawal.
Required Forms and Online Courses
Required forms include the Health Clearance Form, Student Information Sheet, BBA Acknowledgement Form, Emergency Medical Authorization Form, Health Insurance Form, Release and Indemnification Agreement, the Flight and Passport Information Form and meeting with your academic advisor. Additionally, depending on the study abroad destination or use of financial aid, students may be required to complete the Travel Health Online Course and the Online Financial Aid Counseling course.
Step 5: Schedule an Academic Advising Appointment
Accepted BBA study abroad students must make an individual appointment with their academic advisor to satisfy the Credit Walk-in Hours and Credit Processing requirement on the SAB Portal. Please reference the Vital Resources section in Blackboard for detailed instructions regarding your advising appointment and to view an explanation of how study abroad credit and grade processing will work.
