The Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made outstanding professional contributions to the business community and who, by their exemplary civic, philanthropic and educational activities, have advanced humanity.

R. Steven Hicks

R. Steven “Steve” Hicks serves as Chairman of Capstar Partners, LLC, which participates in small and middle market buyouts, real estate development and public investing. Its largest investment, Harden Healthcare, employs over 30,000 people in Texas.

Prior to founding Capstar Partners, Hicks was a 28 year veteran of the radio industry. He bought his first radio station at age 29 and over the next 14 years acquired stations in 6 states. Hicks co-founded and served as CEO of SFX Broadcasting, Inc. from 1989 until 1996.

Hicks made radio history by inventing the local marketing agreement (LMA), which dramatically changed how the broadcasting industry did business. In 1997, Hicks received the award for Radio Executive of the Year and was ranked one of the 5 Most Powerful People in Radio by Radio Ink magazine.

In 1996, Hicks founded and served as CEO of Capstar Broadcasting Corp. Capstar acquired over 350 radio stations and was one of the largest radio groups in the country, leading to a successful initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 1998. In 1999, Capstar Broadcasting merged with Chancellor Media Corp. and the combined company was renamed AMFM Inc. Hicks served as vice-chairman of AMFM until 2000 when it was acquired by Clear Channel Communications.

Hicks serves on numerous charitable and professional boards and was appointed to the UT System Board of Regents in 2009. Hicks graduated from UT in 1972 with a BA in Government. He is a proud husband, father and grandfather of 13.

Admiral Bobby R. Inman

Admiral Bobby R. Inman graduated from UT in 1950 and from the National War College in 1972. He became an adjunct professor at UT in 1987 and was appointed as a tenured professor holding the Lyndon B. Johnson Centennial Chair in National Policy in 2001. He served as Interim Dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs in 2005 and again January 2009 through March 2010.

Inman served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1982, when he retired with the permanent rank of Admiral. While on active duty, he served as Director of the National Security Agency and Deputy Director of Central Intelligence. After retirement from the Navy, Inman was Chairman and CEO of the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC) for four years and Chairman, President and CEO of Westmark Systems, Inc., for three years. He also served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas from 1987 through 1990.

Since 1990, Inman has been a Managing Director of Gefinor Ventures and Limestone Ventures. He is a member of the Board of Directors of several privately held companies and serves as a Trustee of the American Assembly and the California Institute of Technology. He is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.

John H. Massey

John H. Massey has pursued a career as an entrepreneur, investor and corporate manager. He has participated successfully in more than 50 acquisitions, mergers and leveraged buyouts. Additionally, he has served as President of a series of business organizations listed on the NYSE including Gulf United Corporation and Gulf Broadcast Company.

Mr. Massey currently serves as Chair of the Investment Committee for the private equity funds group Neuberger Berman Company founded in 1939 and now one of the world’s largest investment management companies. He has also been an active participant on a number of publicly owned corporate boards of directors including eight companies listed on the NYSE.

In 2009 Mr. Massey received the outstanding Dallas Texas Exes Alumnus Award. In 2011 he received the highest honor awarded to an alumnus of The University of Texas, the Presidential Citation. He is also a life member of the McCombs School Advisory Board, Trustee of the UT Foundation and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the UT Law School Foundation.

Mr. Massey and his wife Libba divide their time between homes in Dallas and Columbus, Texas. Mrs. Massey has chaired UT’s Development Board and Co-Chaired its Capital Campaign. The Massey’s have three adult children Elizabeth, John and Preston and six grandchildren.

Roy M. Spence

Roy Spence is Co-Founder and Chairman of GSD&M, a national and leading marketing communications and advertising company.

Under Spence’s leadership, his agency has helped grow some of the world’s most successful brands like “Don’t Mess with Texas,” Southwest Airlines, Wal-Mart, DreamWorks, the PGA TOUR, BMW, the U.S. Air Force, LLBean and the Clinton Global Initiative. He and his agency also created The University of Texas branding campaign “We’re Texas” narrated by UT legend Walter Cronkite and the “What starts here changes the world.” He has been a trusted advisor to legendary leaders including Sam Walton and Southwest Airlines founder, Herb Kelleher. His council has also been sought by U.S. presidents and leaders in the State Department and Department of Defense. He has been named Ad Man of the Year and Idea Man of the Century.

Spence is also Co-Founder and CEO of The Purpose Institute, a consulting firm whose purpose is to help people and organizations discover and live their purpose. He co-authored the Wall Street Journal bestselling book, “It’s Not What You Sell, It’s What You Stand For: Why Every Extraordinary Business is Driven by Purpose.”

Roy has been married 35 years and has three children. He is a member of the board of directors of the Conscious Capitalism Institute, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation and is a Distinguished Alumnus of UT.
