Depending on the interests and goals of each class of MBA students, a number of student organizations form each year to further professional development opportunities, serve the university or build social networks. Organizations centered on consulting, entrepreneurship, finance and student government have been popular with Working Professional MBA students in recent years. You are encouraged to take on a leadership position in an existing organization or start your own group. This is an excellent opportunity to develop and demonstrate leadership skills and make connections with industry leaders. Some student organizations that have been active in previous years are listed below.
The Entrepreneurship Club welcomes all budding entrepreneurs, people working in startups, and people interested in investing in startups. Club activities include the creation of business plans, brainstorming ideas, creation of special interest groups and inviting key speakers who have started or funded small businesses to provide their perspectives. The focus is on technology / health care ventures, though every idea, big or small, is always welcome.
The Consulting Club's mission is to connect and support classmates who share an interest in consulting careers (a student does not have to be currently employed as a consultant to join). It provides a platform for understanding the consulting career lifestyle through panel discussions and the alumni network within management consulting firms. The group also hosts company info sessions and provides opportunities for case interview preparation.
Graduate Marketing Network
The mission of the Graduate Marketing Network–Dallas Chapter is to help members grow as marketing professionals. The club provides opportunities to network, learn from industry experts, and improve leadership abilities. It encourages teamwork, integrity, and a commitment to community involvement. Special interest groups help students hone their skills for particular marketing specialties, and members build relationships and share ideas in fun and engaging settings.
Graduate Women In Business (GWIB)
Graduate Women in Business strives to provide an atmosphere conducive to the professional and personal development of its members.
GWIB's goals include:
- improving the visibility of women in the McCombs School of Business
- offering career development resources to our members
- providing opportunities for our members to enhance the skills they need to remain competitive in the marketplace
- connecting members to news stories and articles related to women's issues in the workplace
- acting as an informational resource for prospective McCombs students
- promoting a spirit of camaraderie among our members and women in the business community in a variety of social settings and events
The mission of the DMBA Healthcare Club is to form a cohesive network to help its members maintain a relevant understanding of the ever changing landscape of medicine. We hope to make a lasting impact on the industry through creativity, collaboration, strategic leadership, and above all, unwavering integrity.
The DFW Investment Club was created by members of the McCombs School of Business Dallas MBA class of 2013 who are interested in actively trading and investing in equities, indexes, mutual funds, commodities and their respective derivatives. The club formed as an LLC in January, 2012. Members contribute monthly to the general funds of the company which formulates and executes investments and trading strategies according to approved proposals. Members are encouraged to collaborate and share their insight and knowledge on multiple industries and market sectors. In addition to core investment strategies, the club focuses on trading strategies including protective stops, hedging and complex option spreads. The club is intended to provide members with a deep and meaningful experience in trading and investment which will be valuable in future personal and professional market endeavors.
Graduate Business Council (GBC)
The GBC is the student government for all students enrolled in the Texas MBA at Dallas/Fort Worth program. The mission of the Graduate Business Council is to provide a forum for students to directly impact administrative policy matters while overseeing the development and maintenance of a strong sense of community and pride within the McCombs School of Business.
McCombs Admissions Committee (MAC)
The McCombs Admissions Committee plays a vital role in providing the admissions staff with a student perspective on the MBA admissions process. MAC members participate in many aspects of MBA admissions including planning and attending recruiting events and serving as a point of contact for prospective applicants. As current students who were recently in your shoes, MAC members are a source of insight into the program for you as a prospective student, and a source of constant feedback for our admissions office to ensure we are addressing your needs as potential applicants and future Texas MBAs.
