The McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin offers students a global business learning experience focusing on international business challenges. This year, we are including six practicums to expose our students to business in the following regions: China, Middle East (Turkey & UAE), India, South Africa, Southeast Asia (Thailand and Vietnam) and Brazil.
The McCombs MBA program is among the top 25 business schools in the U.S. and is rated among the best in the world in entrepreneurial management and information technology by Business Week, the Wall Street Journal, U.S. News and World Report and Financial Times.
Our objective is to give MBA students a practical international business experience and to deliver a meaning product to project sponsors.
The global program includes three components:
- six preparatory lectures on the cultural, socio-economic and political backdrop of doing business in the country of focus;
- a two week trip to the country;
- consulting projects for private or public corporations doing business or wanting to do business in that country.
Sponsoring a Project
One of the most important and unique components of the course is that students complete an actual consulting project for a real corporation. Teams of three or four students work with companies to solve actual problems and create new initiatives for business. Our MBA students can research and identify the opportunities and challenges of marketing products or services into the country of focus. Projects can include market analysis, market segmentation, distribution channel analysis, competitor analysis, best-practice pricing strategies and packaging/positioning. They can also evaluate or develop (within a specified scope) business strategies, strategic marketing plans, financial strategies and implementation of entrepreneurial processes.
Projects are completed free of charge for the sponsor, although companies will occasionally sponsor meals or events while the class is on the two week business trip. Typically, the project sponsor is responsible for the following:
August-October - Work with the faculty and student leading the trip to identify and scope the specific project(s) you think appropriate for an MBA team.
Jan-March - Appoint one person within your organization who will be available for the student group to contact for relevant company, product, and market information.
March-May - Senior management will receive the agreed upon deliverables (presentation and written analysis). It is preferable that a senior representative from the organization attend the final presentations while the students are in the country on their two-week trip and/or in Austin, whichever is most appropriate for the company/project.
