THE BASICS
The Texas Evening MBA employs a rolling admissions process – therefore completed applications are reviewed in chronological order and not grouped in rounds. Applicants can expect decisions 4-6 weeks after submittal of a complete application file. Download a printable copy of the detailed application instructions (PDF).

Texas MBA admission is a shared process at the University of Texas at Austin between McCombs and the Graduate and International Admission Center (GIAC). Below are key steps for completing your application to the MBA program.
Note to re-applicants: Application materials are kept for one calendar year only. Applicants reapplying must submit a new online application form, application fee, and may choose to submit a new resume and essays. Additional letters of recommendation and test scores are not required, but may be submitted. Transcripts must be re-submitted only if additional coursework has been taken since the last application. International students must obtain an updated statement of financial support.
STEP 1 – GET STARTED
Connect with McCombs: When deciding whether or not the Texas MBA is right for you, we strongly recommend scheduling an Information Session or Class Visit. Attending one or both of these can help you get a feel for what it would be like to be a McCombs student as you interact with current students, faculty and staff.
Start Your Application: We encourage applicants to get started by creating a UT EID (or connecting to your existing UT EID) and starting the Texas MBA online application. Click here to create (or connect to) your UT EID. The admissions committee recommends that you go ahead and start filling out the online application even if you have not taken the GMAT/GRE or finished your essays. This enables you to get into our system so that we may contact you with admissions updates.
STEP 2 - APPLICATION
Complete Online Application : The Texas MBA Program Office will contact applicants via email to set up the interview after the submission of the online application as long as the submitted application includes the following items – resume, unofficial test score and unofficial transcript. The MBA Program Office will consider submitted applications without essays and letters of recommendations for an interview.
- Biographical Information
- Personal Information
- Education History – Upload Unofficial Transcripts
- Test Scores – GMAT or GRE; TOEFL
- Employment History – Upload Resume
- Visa Information – International applicants only
- Essays – Upload if complete (or email later if not complete at time of application)
- Letters of Recommendation – Enter contact information of recommenders (system will send an email immediately to prompt them to fill out online recommendation form)
- Certification of Information
Transcripts: Upload unofficial transcripts to send to McCombs in this section. Be sure you have blocked out any social security numbers on these documents BEFORE uploading. You will also perform a separate upload of unofficial transcripts to GIAC after submitting your application and paying the fee (see “After Application” section below). However, please note, once a student is admitted, UT Austin requires that original documents (both mark sheets and degree certificate) be submitted for verification (see the “After Admission” section below). Please note the MBA program has no mandatory minimum grade point average. For the most recent class, the typical GPA fell between 3.2-3.8. Important Note: Applicant must have the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from India and Pakistan are three-year programs and are not considered equivalent to the U.S. bachelor's degree. If you hold one of these three-year degrees you are not eligible for admission to graduate school. Partial completion of the master’s program will not make you eligible for our graduate programs. To obtain further clarification of this equivalency requirement please contact GIAC directly by phone at (512) 475-7391 or fax (512) 475-7395. If documents are written in a language other than English, complete and official English translations must be sent together with the original language records. Each transcript (mark sheet) should contain a complete record of studies at the institution from which it is issued (i.e., the subjects taken and grades [marks] earned in each subject).
Test Scores: Applicant should enter their highest score into the online application and may include a scanned copy of the unofficial score printout. Official test scores must be received by the University of Texas at Austin before an official decision is rendered. GMAT and GRE test scores expire five years from the test date, and TOEFL test scores expire two years from the test date. Your application must be submitted before the test score expires to be considered valid. You may take the test as often as you wish, just be sure to contact the admissions team to let us know you will be retaking it. Texas will only consider your highest score – the Texas MBA does not average scores. For the most recent class, the typical GMAT scores fell between 600-750.
A waiver of the TOEFL is automatically granted (no request needed) if you are an international applicant and have earned an undergraduate degree in a country where the official language is English (not just an English-speaking institution or a country where English is spoken – see country list here). The TOEFL may also be waived based on your employment in the U.S. and/or based on your English-speaking skills as assessed in an in-person interview (if you are invited in for an interview, the admissions committee will let you know afterwards if the TOEFL can be waived).
Test Score Codes: Submit official test scores to The University of Texas at Austin using the following codes:
-
GMAT Code: 396-44-40
-
GRE Code: 6882
-
TOEFL Code: 6882
-
IELTS: Not accepted at McCombs
-
PTE: Not accepted at McCombs
Essays: Two (2) required personal essays – can be uploaded to the online application or may be emailed directly to Application-TexasMBA@Mccombs.utexas.edu.
| ESSAY |
QUESTION |
| Essay #1 (Required - 900 words max) |
Describe how your professional and personal experiences have led you to pursue the Texas Evening MBA at this time. Please share with us your short and long term goals and why the Texas Evening MBA is the program best positioned to help you achieve them. |
| Essay #2 (Required - 900 words max) |
Transcripts, test scores and work history are all very important factors of the application, however, they don't tell the whole story. Tell the admissions committee something about yourself that we will not be able to glean from the rest of your application packet. |
Essay #3 (Optional - 900 words max) Only if applying to more than one Texas MBA program. |
Please write a response detailing why you are applying to two McCombs MBA programs and explain how each can fulfill your graduate school objectives as described in your earlier essay. |
| Essay #4 (Optional - 350 words max) |
Please provide any additional information to the Admissions Committee that you believe is important and/or will address any areas of concern that will be beneficial to the committee in considering your application. |
Letters of Recommendation: References should come from individuals who have a superior working knowledge of the applicant, be professional in nature and should speak to the applicant's professional work, qualities, career potential and potential to succeed in the classroom. Emails to your recommenders will be launched as soon as you save this section of the application. If your recommenders do not receive the email, please ask them to check their spam or junk email box. The email message to your recommenders provides a link to the online recommendation form that is preferred by the Texas MBA Program Office and linked directly to your application. You can monitor the status of your recommendations during and after submitting your application, and you can resend notifications if necessary. The Texas MBA program application requires two (2) letters of recommendation.
STEP 3 - AFTER APPLICATION
Pay Application Fee (non-refundable): Payment of the $125 application fee is required in order for your application to be accepted and evaluated. Within two business days of submission of your application you will receive an email with instructions on submitting payment of your application fee in the UT payment website “What I Owe.” Your application fee status should reflect “Paid” within five business days of submission.
Former UT Austin students will also be prompted to pay an additional $10 transcript processing fee for your UT Austin transcripts to be pulled from the Registrar. This amount will be billed to you through “What I Owe” and may or may not be invoiced at the same time as the application fee.
If you apply to more than one Texas MBA program or to an MBA and MSTC, you are required to pay the Texas MBA application fee and the other application fee will be waived. Please contact us AFTER you have submitted both applications.
Upload Unofficial Transcripts to GIAC: After you have submitted your application and paid the fee, you will receive an email that contains a link to the GIAC document upload website where you will be able to upload unofficial transcripts. The uploaded transcript is considered to be unofficial but will be used to process your application for admission. Please do not mail official transcripts or paper copies of your transcripts before you are offered admission. Sending paper copies of documents you have uploaded will significantly delay the processing of your application. Former UT Austin students do not need to upload UT Austin transcripts.
See important general information on transcripts. See instructions for uploading the PDF of your transcript.
Upload a copy of you Green Card (Permanent Residents Only) to GIAC: If you are a permanent resident, upload a copy of front and back of your Green Card to The University of Texas at Austin - Graduate and International Admission Center (GIAC) AFTER paying your application fee: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/ogs/forms/supp_docs.WBX. Note: This link is only available after you have paid your application fee in full. Applicants who have applied for U.S. Permanent Residency but who do not yet have the Green Card in hand must apply as international students; should the Green Card arrive thereafter, the applicant may notify GIAC and the status will be changed to domestic applicant.
Admissions Interview Policy: McCombs utilizes an invitation-only interview system. This means that the Admissions Committee will review applications and invite selected candidates to interview. The Program Office will contact applicants via email to set up the interview after the submission of the online application, resume, unofficial test score and unofficial transcript. Important Note: In order to determine whether or not an interview will be scheduled, the Texas MBA Program Office must be in receipt of at least the following application items:
- Online Application (must be SUBMITTED)
- Resume
- Transcripts (unofficial photocopy will suffice for interview scheduling).
- GMAT or GRE Score (applicant should enter their highest test score into the application). Official test scores must be received by the University of Texas at Austin for an admissions decision to be rendered.
* Essays and recommendation letters can be sent on a later date. Please note, all application items must be received prior to review for a possible admissions decision. Essays can be mailed to: Application-TexasMBA@mccombs.utexas.edu
Monitor Status of Uploaded Document and Test Score – GIAC: Monitor the status of your uploaded transcripts and official test scores by checking the University of Texas at Austin status page here. If any of these items show as outstanding or not received, your application decision will be delayed. This status check should be used exclusively for these items. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required credentials are received. All other components of your application and final decision should be monitored at the McCombs Status Check below.
Monitor Status of your Application Decision – McCombs: Please remember to monitor the progress of your submitted Texas MBA application through the application status here.
STEP 4 - AFTER ADMISSION
Accept our Offer and Pay your Enrollment Deposit: When ready, accept our offer online here. Additionally, submit your $2,000 non-refundable enrollment deposit and other admissions forms included on your MBA Resource Guide which will be mailed to you a few weeks after the date of admission.
Texas Residency Status: All applicants will have a temporary status of NON-RESIDENT throughout the application process. If an admission offer is made and accepted, candidates have access to an online residency questionnaire. Official residency status is determined within seven business days of submission of the residency questionnaire online. Information about residency can be found here.
Official U.S. Transcripts: If you are offered admission, you will be required to submit official transcripts BEFORE you will be allowed to enroll. Official transcripts are those that bear the facsimile signature of the registrar and seal of the issuing institution. Note: Sending official transcript(s) through the domestic transcript network is fastest and easiest. Institutions that are on the Texas Electronic Transcript Network or which use the national ANSI ASC X12 transcript format (SPEEDE) can provide electronic transcripts. GIAC prefers to receive electronic transcripts because they can be processed much faster than paper transcripts. Check with the registrar of your institution to find out if transcripts can be sent electronically.
