Frequently Asked Questions
- How does the new Texas Evening MBA compare to The Executive MBA programs?
Students from both programs participate in study groups that meet outside of class.
TEMBA
- Students remain fully employed and attend classes on Monday and Tuesday evenings
- Takes 33 months-3 fall, 3 spring, and 2 summer semesters
- Students attend 3 one-week Austin Intensive experience Immersion Courses in August of each year
- Draws students from the Austin metro area
- Minimum 2 years of work experience; average experience is 6 years
Executive MBA
- Students remain fully employed and attend class every other weekend (all day Friday and Saturday)
- Takes 21 months-2 fall, 2 spring, and no summer semesters. Students may take one or both of their elective courses during the summer
- Students attend 4 one-week Executive Seminars at specified times in their program
- Draws from a larger geographical area, primarily Texas but also nationally
- Minimum 5 years of work experience; average experience 12 years
- Will TEMBA use a cohort system?
Yes, students will enter as a cohort class - the same group of students will take the same sequence of courses together.
- Is this the same degree as the Full-Time MBA?
The University awards only one MBA degree. All MBA candidates earn the same MBA degree, regardless of the program they are registered in.
- Where is the Austin Intensive Experience held?
During the Austin Intensives students reside at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center on the UT Austin Campus. Students will be in-residence during the week at the Austin Intensive site and should not plan for any work activity during this time.
- How many classes will I take each semester?
Students take two classes a semester for 7 semesters (fall, spring, summer, fall, spring, summer, fall) and three courses their final semester (spring).
- How much time should I expect to spend outside class?
The typical TEMBA student should expect to spend 10-15 hours preparing for class and attending study group meetings.
- What happens if I fail a course?
Courses in which grades of C- or below are earned do not count toward the MBA degree, although all letter grades affect the cumulative MBA GPA. If a grade of C- or below is earned in a course, students must retake the course in order to fulfill the program requirements for graduation. Given the lock-step nature of the program, this will often require the student to wait a year or more to re-take the course and could result in a suspension from other courses if the particular course is a pre-requisite for future courses. Students earning grades of C- and below will also require more than 48 hours to complete their degrees. Students who receive a C- or less should contact the Texas Evening MBA program office immediately to discuss options.

Fees/Financial Aid
- When is payment due?
An invoice will be sent directly to the student prior to each semester. Payment is due in full approximately six weeks prior to the start of each semester. Regardless of whether a student is seeking financial aid or receiving a full or partial reimbursement from an employer, he/she is still responsible for payment in full prior to the start of each semester. The University of Texas will reimburse the student if additional payment is made after the semester payment deadline by another party.
- Are there scholarships available or other financial aid?
There are no TEMBA-specific scholarships. Please review the financial aid information on our website for additional assistance.
- Are there any additional program costs for TEMBA if I don't meet Texas residency requirements?
Yes, you will have to pay an additional out-of-state program fee plus any additional University fees for each semester you do not meet the Texas residency requirements. (This fee is set each year by the legislature).
- How do I establish Texas residency?
The question of establishing Texas residency is complicated. Only independent (for federal tax purposes) US citizens or permanent residents (holders of a valid I-551 issued in their name) are eligible to begin the establishment of Texas residency. Establishment of Texas residency requires that said individual live in Texas for 12 consecutive months without being enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Furthermore, many companies have agreements with the state of Texas allowing employees who transfer from an out-of-state location to receive waivers of tuition to in-state rates. The residency classification will not change during the first year for this type of waiver. For further questions, contact a University of Texas residency officer at (512) 475-7391 or visit the website at
