Business Plan Competitions

MSTC students are uniquely prepared to compete in a variety of local, national and even international business plan and entrepreneurship competitions. The list below represents a small fraction of the opportunities in which students may put their skills to practice.

Most university-sponsored competitions are held in the spring of each year. As deadlines and entry requirements change on regular basis, please see the link for each individual competition for more information.

Venture Labs Investment Competition, formerly called Moot Corp

Often referred to as "the Super Bowl of world business plan competitions," the Venture Labs Investment Competition is a world-renowned competition that simulates the experience of raising venture capital. Held annually at The University of Texas at Austin, students work in teams to take an idea for a new business, develop the idea into a written business plan, develop a presentation and pitch the idea to a panel of entrepreneurs, angel investors and venture capitalists.

Idea 2 Product

Founded at The University of Texas at Austin, the I2P competition is for early-stage technology commercialization plans. The aim is to investigate unique product ideas using innovative technologies and match them with market demand. The competition is open to all UT Austin students who are interested in technology-focused entrepreneurship.

Social Innovation

Located within the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service sponsors a competition for full-time students at Texas Universities with entrepreneurial ideas that can change the world. Entering ventures should exist primarily to address a significant social problem.

Rice University Business Plan Competition

Offering one of the richest cash awards among business plan competitions, this annual competition is sponsored by Rice University, providing a unique opportunity for MSTC students in the Houston area. The winner of this competition, like several other regional events, qualifies to move on to the Global Moot Corp Competition.

McGinnis Venture Competition

Sponsored by Carnegie-Mellon University, the competition revolves around new technologies. Winners receive cash prizes, opportunities to pitch to venture capitalists and intellectual property services. Some also receive automatic berth to Moot Corp.
