How to Apply to a Ph.D. Program at McCombs
All programs require students to enroll full-time, starting in the fall semester.
Admission decisions are primarily based on:
- Test scores, including the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) or
Graduate Record Examination (GRE)* score(s)
(*Please note: Accounting does not accept GRE scores.)
- Letters of recommendation
- Performance in previous academic work
- Statement of Purpose
- TOEFL scores for international students of which it is required (please see requirements to determine if this applies to you)
Admitted students generally have GMAT scores of 680 or more, GRE scores in
excess of 1400 and grade point averages above 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Each
departmental Ph.D. program in the McCombs School of Business has a separate
admissions process, so please check the requirements of the department that you
are interested in carefully.
IMPORTANT TEXAS PH.D. APPLICATION PROCEDURE OVERVIEW
Application for admission is a dual process at UT. To apply for the McCombs
doctoral program, you will need to apply to both the Graduate and International
Admissions Center's (GIAC) and to the McCombs department of your choice. GIAC is
not a part of the McCombs School; it is the central admissions group for the
University’s Graduate School and all prospective graduate students must apply
through their
online application
(see Application Procedure, below, for
details). Visit the Web sites of the Graduate School and Graduate and
International Admissions Center (GIAC) for important information about the
University’s admissions process and policies.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Please note that there are three main parts to the application process. You will
be applying to both the University of Texas at Austin and the program. The
University requires certain items, while the department has its own
requirements.
- First, all applicants must apply online at Apply Texas. Applications for the
following academic year are typically ready on Sept. 1 of the current year.
Helpful tip: When you apply, the online application will prompt you for the
names and contact information of the people who will be writing recommendation
letters for you. Providing this information when you are applying can save you
(and your recommenders) some time and work later, as your recommenders will be
able to complete their letters online.
- Second, send the items below to the University of Texas Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC):
- Official copies of transcripts from all previously attended universities.
- Official GMAT or GRE* scores (please note that Accounting does not
accept GRE scores.) Helpful tip: If you took the GMAT prior to 2005,
UT's recipient code is 6882 or 3964445 for computer based testing.
- Official TOEFL report (international applicants only)
- Application fee ($50.00 for U.S. applicants/$75.00 for international applicants)
GIAC postal address:

GIAC courier address:

- Third, please check your prospective department’s Web site for any additional
materials that might be required. Please note that even if you have submitted
materials to GIAC, you may be asked to submit copies to the department directly.
Once you’ve applied, you can
get your UT EID,
which will allow you to check the status of your application online. You may also want to read about
important housing, dining, and insurance information, along with fun facts, in the University’s
online Grad Guide.
