Young Water in Aged Paradise
"On my trip to the south of France, we landed first in Nice. This old town was stagnant, but the youthful faces and fresh vitality of those who traveled here filled the city with a new spirit. I thought this beautiful waterfall captured my sentiments exactly."

Cinque Terre, Italy
By Marcel Santilli
ESADE, Spring 2009 | Barcelona, Spain
"The Cinque Terre is noted for its beauty. Over centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible "modern" development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach it from the outside."

Looking out from The Garden of Europe
"The hourglass-like transition to European life made for a semester full of simple memories and incredible moments, all running out just a little too soon. The majestic Keukenhof tulips, pictured, were one of my most splendid excursions from Belgium, as well as a realization of the magnitude and beauty of 7,000,000 flower lone bulbs, together."

University of Economics, Spring 2009 | Prague, Czech Republic
"Backpacking for two weeks, by myself, through Ireland, Paris and London was the biggest adventure of my life! Not only is Ireland a part of my heritage, but visiting there has always been one of my childhood dreams. This picture almost was not taken because I overslept that morning and barely caught the tour bus as it was leaving on its way to the Cliffs of Moher and the west coast of Ireland. I ran in the rain, with my circa1980 35mm camera in tow, trying to find the bus stop before it departed. Soaking wet, out of breath and little disoriented, it seemed like everyone was looking at me as if I were a mad man. Luckily for me, however, I was able to stop the bus in the middle of the road. Even more luckily for me, that trip proved just how beautiful Ireland is as a country…when it is not raining!"

Pizza Pie
"Traveling through Italy was the best 2 weeks I spent during my semester abroad. Seeing all the different cities was a great experience. My favorite meal of the entire trip was eating authentic pizza in the place where Pizza was born- Naples."

By Joe J. Estrada
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Spring 2009 | Hong Kong S.A.R., China

"Three friends and I ventured into Bangkok over the weekened from Hong Kong. On our last day there we woke up at 3AM to see the famous 'Floating Market' -- and worried we wouldn't make it to the airport on time on the way back as it took about two hours to get there and two hours back. When we arrived, we boarded a canoe and bought some lunch as we ventured through the local upstream farmers who came down the river selling flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The experience was truly unforgetable. I still remember the jungle, the huts on the side, and the experiences that came with getting around without knowing any Thai!"

Universidad de Deusto, Spring 2009 | Bilbao, Spain

"Though I fell down a lot and ended up with more bruises than I could count, I will never forget my experience skiing in the French Pyrenees with the incredible friends I made while studying abroad in the Basque Country, Spain. The breathtaking views of the Pyrenees mountains, the hills of northern Spain, and the forests surrounding the Bay of Biscay were absolutely unforgettable."

University of Bath, Spring 2009 | Bath, England
"When I was living in Bath, one of my favorite things to do was to walk home from school and enjoy the breathtaking views of the city. I took this picture one afternoon right after it stopped raining and the sun was setting. It perfectly captures the beauty and magic of the small English town."

By Vivian Gao
Shanghai Jiaotong University, Spring 2009 | Shanghai, China
"Climb for three hours up and down the Great Wall was one of my accomplishments abroad. We decided to go to the most fashionable segment of the Great Wall where Fendi held their fashion show. After transferring two lines of subway and two buses, we finally arrived at our destination. Juyongguan has a great importance serving as the north pass into the capital of China. And thanks to its strategic geography we were able to see a spectacular view from the top!"

Hua Shan Mountain in China
By David McNeill
National University of Singapore, Spring 2009 | Singapore
"I took this photo in China atop Hua Shan, one of the five sacred Taoist mountains in China. I decided to spend the night on top of the mountain and opted for the cheapest accommodations. Unfortunately, the inn I stayed at did not have running water or working electricity, which made my experience there quite unique! I got up at 4:30 AM the next morning and climbed to the top of the mountain to see the sunrise. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!"

By Mandy Gatton
Universita Commerciale Bocconi, Spring 2009 | Milan, Italy
"Living in Milan and traveling across Europe for 6 months was by far the best decision I have ever made. I met so many people that became more like family than friends and experienced life changing events that I never thought possible. In the process, I learned to speak statue, fluently, thanks to the Norwegian statue park in Oslo."

Fundacao Getulio Vargas, Spring 2009 | Sao Paulo, Brazil
"Brazilians are a special people. Their passion for life captivated me, as the camera captivated this young boy. A Chilean named Jorge Selarón created this tiled stairway, a mosaic of ceramics from around the world, as a tribute to the Brazilian people. Although we spoke no common language, this child and I, as he stood in front of a recipe for New Orleans' gumbo dressed in the colors of the Brazilian flag, we were inextricably linked by our fascination with one another."

ESADE Business School, Spring 2009 | Barcelona, Spain
"Set in the countryside of Sardinero, Espana, Playa Sopelana is quite far from the busy streets and exotic nightlife of Barcelona- where I studied abroad this past spring semester. Nevertheless, this shot will always bring me great memories of my epic backpacking excursion through Spain's rugged northern coast."

Venice, Italy
By Linda Nguyen
Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, Spring 2009 | Milan, Italy
[Title: The Pearl of My Trip]
"The most stunning qualities in Italy are the culture and the people – the young and old, alike. Varying from region to region, the differences and similarities each provided one more piece to the charming puzzle of my experience.
While spending less than twenty-four hours in Venice, I experienced the chaos of Carnival. The beautiful canals, rich crimson gondolas, elaborate costumes, and tens of thousands of tourists contributed to the wonderful commotion. After losing my group, I wandered around San Marco Square and saw a little girl in costume. There was clearly something unique and beautiful about her. Composed and confident, at a young age, she represented the culture of Italy, which I spent seven months discovering, experiencing, and embracing. Both this little girl and the robust culture of Italy embody subtle beauties, which never cease to effortlessly take my breath away."

"And to think I considered Austin a big biking city. It was absolutely incredible to see how many people ride bikes in Amsterdam. There’s even parking garages, but just for bikes! This photo really evokes the atmosphere of the city…just make sure you don’t get ran over while crossing the street."

Mt. Hua, China
By Yuning Ma
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Spring 2009 | Shanghai, China
"I studied abroad in Shanghai, China and had an opportunity to travel to Mt. Hua. I went with another (female) friend who also exchanged in Shanghai. The hike up the FIVE peaks was strenuous; we even surprised some of the guys our age because we made it to all of the peaks while they turned around after the first one! In those two days I learned lots about "roughing it" (no running water, little electricity, no cell phone signal up at the top), and was treated to ideal weather conditions to see a beautiful sunrise."

Nice is Nice

"While on a weekend trip to Torino, I impulsively skipped out on the plane ride home and hopped on a 10 euro train to Nice, a beach town on the Côte d’Azur. I intended to stay for a few days, but found myself there for 8, lost in the socca, fun nightlife, sunny weather, and 94 flavors at Fennochio's ice cream parlor. What can I say? Nice really is Nice."

Mong Kok, Hong Kong
By Tanisha Shang
Chinese University of Hong Kong, Summer 2009 | Hong Kong, China
"As cliché as it sounds, my trip to Hong Kong was unforgettable. Hong Kong is known for its vibrant nightlife and skyline, but beautiful landscape encompasses the center of the city. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is located atop a mountain and is surrounded by water, revealing a beautiful and tranquil atmosphere. Yet, after several stops on the subway, you'll enter the bustling city and encounter the crazy nightlife Hong Kong is known for."

Copenhagen School of Business, Summer 2009 | Copenhagen, Denmark
"I snapped this picture on a walking tour through Christiania, a free-living society, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Christiania is a town within a city and has faced turmoil with Copenhagen. This statue was erected as a tribute to a small dog that was accidentally killed during a police raid."

Tanalog Temple, Bali, Indonesia
By Jessie Lang
University of New South Wales, Spring 2009 | Sydney, Australia
"This Balinese temple at sunset took my breath away with the cool breeze. I was on a small tour and the only native English speaker I had come across in the previous ten days was sick. On my own, I learned the traditions and practices of a culture I had no experience with. This temple summarizes the overwhelming sense of freedom and independence I experienced while abroad."

By Danielle Esparza
Thammasat University, Spring 2009 | Bangkok, Thailand
"Trekking through Vietnam was a surprising way to spend spring break. South east Asia offered beautiful scenery, delicious food, and curious creatures. I found this ox trudging in a stream on the mountain path off the small village town of Sapa. Northern Vietnam's fusion of traditional villages and picturesque french architecture was like stepping into another time."

"While traveling on boat from Fethiye to Olympos on the coast of Turkey, we stopped at the Island Kale. The "town" is only accessible by boat and completely uncharted. While climbing over the rocks my friend and I stumbled across this local fisherman wading through the sea."

Arbon, Switzerland on the Bodensee
By Casey Lehmann
Universität St. Gallen (HSG), Spring 2009 | St. Gallen, Switzerland

"We ended the semester with a day trip to the lake. The weather and scenery was spectacular, a great stress relief after exams. We rented paddle boats and decided to take them as far out as we could. After we had been paddling for about an hour, this suave European with his bright red shoes caught our attention. Luckily I was able to snap the shot before the police boat informed us that paddle boats were not allowed further than 300 meters from the shore!"

Paris, France
By Samantha Paylim
ESCP Europe, Fall 2008 | Paris, France

"The Butte Montmartre is one of my favorite areas of Paris, with the gorgeous Sacré Cœur Basilica sitting on top of the hill. Paris had been endlessly rainy for a couple of weeks, completely void of sunshine. One day during a break between classes, we stepped outside onto ESCP’s courtyard to an amazing clear blue sky… we didn’t make it to the rest of our classes that day."

65 Years Later

By Samantha Paylim
ESCP Europe, Spring 2009 | Paris, France

"My travel buddies and I were actually in search of Omaha Beach, where President Obama was set to honor the heroes of the D-Day Invasion, who had landed on those very beaches exactly 65 years ago. It turns out the event was invitation only (we probably should have done some research), so we were denied access to Omaha Beach. We were a bit dismayed until we spotted a parade of WWII vehicles on Gold Beach, as well as this group of merry Swiss gentlemen, who were incredibly friendly and gave each of us a beachside ride on their WWII motorcycle. We ran into them the next day in Bayeux, where they invited us to Zurich for a WWII convention!"

Brussels, Belgium
By Corinna Bahr
Universite Catholiqué de Louvain, Spring 2009 | Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium
"After a dark, dreary, rainy winter in Belgium, Brussels exploded with life and color as we took part in the first EVER balloon parade! The parade featured a ginormous Mannekin Pis, the Smurfs, Tin Tin, and more. This picture features the Belgian Stock Exchange. While waiting for the floats to arrive, people crowded the streets - adults and children alike - to celebrate the famous Belgian bandes dessinées (comics) and have a good time! Definitely a highlight of my spring... and my all-around amazing time studying abroad!"

San Sebastian, Spain
By Iris Yen
Universidad Pontificia Comillas, ICADE, Spring 2009 | Madrid, Spain
"It was one of my last weeks in Spain, watching the waves chase away my footprints on the deserted and pristine beach of San Sebastian. Though I knew I'd soon be gone as quickly as the trickling sand, my countless memories abroad will never wash away. Whether I was welcoming the spray of the surf in Basque Country, soaking in the Mediterranean cool of Barcelona, or melding into the bustling rhythm of my beloved Madrid, I was inhaling the contagious spirit of the Spanish. And like the tide, I know I'll be drawn back. Siempre hay un vuelo de regreso a Madrid..."

Mt. Rigi, Switzerland
By Joseph Lee
Copenhagen Business School, Summer 2009 | Copenhagen, Denmark
"As I was roadtripping through Europe, I stopped by to hike up some mountains with some friends in Switzerland and saw so many breathtaking views on the way up. Some of the sights looked like perfectly painted portraits. Certainly, one of the most beautiful places in the world."

Life in the Sahara

"My trip to Morocco, and specifically the time I spent in the Merzouga sand dunes in the Sahara Desert, will never be forgotten. There were endless mountains of sand that glistened by both the suns ray and the moons shine. It felt like I was in a different world, unexplored and untainted by globalization and civilization. This photo was taken before my camel ride to the middle of the desert, for an overnight journey. The man in blue is a berber, or a local inhabitant of the desert. He showed us the way of the dunes, and what life is like living nomadically in Northern Africa."

"To me, this picture epitomizes New Zealand. I was lucky enough to travel through the south island while I was studying abroad in Australia. On my second day in the country, we stopped at this sheep farm to have a home cooked meal and enjoyed the company of genuine kiwis. The two and a half weeks I spent there will never be forgotten; I had the time of my life."

Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar)
By Lindsy Davis
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Spring 2009 | Hong Kong
"I ventured down the not-so-beaten path during my adventure in Burma. Entering this country was essentially entering a different world due to the very little contact Burma has with the outside world. Even though the living circumstances were practically third world, the people were incredibly hospitable and the sights were breath-taking. Around every corner there was juxtaposition and something interesting to catch your eye."
