Followers and Hashtags
How do I attract more followers?
Simple! Tweet and retweet consistently, but make sure that the voice of your department or program is apparent in what you choose to share and comment on. And always always always entertain or inform. Preferably both!
Who should I follow?
You can manage who you follow by moving your cursor over the blue Following button located next to each user in your list. This blue button will turn to a red Unfollow, allowing you to delete them.
Search for relevant topics in the search box and see what comes up! Search for users related to your field and follow them. Follow students, alumni, and interact with them. Respond to them when they send you an @ reply. Retweet their tweets to make sure it's clear that you are a person, not a fake bot account. No one wants to follow a spam-bot!
What are hashtags?
Hashtags (indicated using the "#" symbol) are placed right before a keyword or phrase anywhere within a tweet to organize them around important terms and subjects. Let's say you wanted to promote the upcoming McCombs MPA Centennial event. First shorten your URL (using a service like tinyurl.com) and then tweet something like this:
Ex. Join us to celebrate 100 years of accounting excellence at the Centennial Celebration on 9/7 & 9/8! #mccombscentennial http://tinyurl.com/c2xnbav
When someone clicks on the hashtag #mccombscentennial in your tweet OR someone else's, a list of all other mentions of that hashtag appears. This organizes your post on that topic with everyone else's, opening up your audience and aligning you with a massive amount of related content.
Use hashtags often to increase the reach and visibility of your tweets and enhance your site’s following. Hashtags allow you to watch campaigns grow across the entire Twitter network. They're an amazing marketing tool!
