Centre for Sustainable Design (UK)—Martin Charter, Director
Martin Charter is the Director of The Centre for Sustainable Design (www.cfsd.org.uk)
at University College for the Creative Arts (UCCA) and a former Visiting
Professor of Sustainable Product Design at UCCA before joining full-time.
Since 1988, he has worked at director level in 'business and environment'
issues in consultancy, leisure, publishing, training, events and research.
Prior to this he held a range of management positions in strategy, research
and marketing in gardening, construction, trade exhibitions, financial services
and consultancy including Save & Prosper Group, Reed International, Creative
Marketing Group and Kiveton Park (Holdings) Ltd. Martin was the launch Director
of Greenleaf Publishing, Marketing Director at the Earth Centre, and former
co-ordinator of one the UK's first green business clubs. More recently he
has run a regional network on green electronics (www.cfsd.org.uk/seeba)
and currently directs a network focused on eco-innovation (www.cfsd.org.uk/eco-i-net).
Martin is former editor of the Journal of Sustainable Product Design, The
Green Management Letter and Greener Management International (where he retains
Editorial Board involvement). Martin is a member of the international advisory
board of CARE electronics network, a judge for the Association of Chartered
& Certified Accountants (ACCA) sustainability reporting awards (2001-2007),
a member of South-East England Development Agency (SEEDA) Waste Market Development
Group, and was an assessor on the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) Technology
Program. Presently, Martin also sits on sustainability advisory boards of
P&G and InterfaceFlor in Europe. He is a regular international conference
speaker and author and editor of various books and publications including
Greener Marketing (1992 and 1999), The Green Management Gurus [e-book] (1996),
Managing Eco-design (1997) and Sustainable Solutions (2001).
Frito-Lay North America—Jim Cleary, Vice President of Agricultural
Operations and Development
Jim Cleary is Vice President of Agricultural Operations and Development
in the Strategic Sourcing and Material Planning Function for Frito-Lay North
America. Jim assumed this position in August of 2005. In this role, he has
accountability for all agricultural related procurement, supply management,
and technology for the United States and Canada. Jim joined Frito-Lay in
1983 and for 15 years held various positions in Operations including Plant
Manager. In 1997 Jim moved into the Procurement Function as Director, Contract
Manufacturing. During his 8 years in Contract Manufacturing, Frito-Lay’s
reliance on outsourced finished goods doubled. Jim graduated from the Georgia
Institute of Technology in 1982 obtaining an Industrial Engineering Degree.
He is active in the community serving on the Board of Directors for the
Dallas Fort Worth Minority Business Council and also co-chairs the Council
Membership Committee.
frog design, inc.—Gabriel Post, Senior Strategist
Gabriel Post is a Senior Strategist at frog design, San Francisco, and has
been consulting in product strategy-related functions for the last 6 years,
researching and evaluating consumer, market, and technology trends to expose
innovation and growth opportunities for his clients. Gabriel is a Stanford
MBA in addition to having master’s in Product Design, a combined program
between Stanford’s School of Engineering and School of Art. Prior to frog,
Gabriel led product development in companies large and small, including
think-tank incubation firm Idealab, internet giant Yahoo!, and high-tech
NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Gabriel has undergraduate degrees in physics
and engineering from Caltech.
Green Electronics Council—Jeff Omelchuck, Director and Founder
Jeff Omelchuck is the Director and Founder of the Green Electronics
Council and the Executive Director of EPEAT. Jeff started his career in
the Silicon Valley where he held a variety of positions spanning product
development and operations management in the electronics industry, including
Program Management, Quality, and Supply Chain Management. Following his
10-year stint in industry Jeff founded and managed a consulting practice
focused on helping organizations develop effective quality management systems
and achieve registration to ISO 9001. In 1996 Jeff indulged his interest
in how society’s use of electronic products affects our future and transitioned
much of his practice to ISO 14001 and into sustainability. Jeff has led
many ISO 9001 and 14001 audits for international registrars and is still
an RABQSA certified ISO 14001 Lead Auditor. Jeff received a BS in Industrial
Engineering from Montana State and an MS in Engineering Management from
Stanford University.
EPEAT is a system to help purchasers in the public and private sectors evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes. EPEAT also provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products, and provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products.
The Lube Stop—Thomas Morley, President
Tom Morley joined Lube Stop as President in 2004. Lube Stop is an $18 million
quick oil change company with 240 employees operating 37 locations in Cleveland
and Akron. Lube Stop is one of the first companies in the industry to launch
a formal sustainability program, focused on reducing the company’s ecological
impact and improving the communities in which it operates. Morley holds
a BA in American History from Hobart College and an MBA in Marketing and
Corporate Strategy from the Ross School of Business at the University of
Michigan. He serves on the IT Steering and the Sustainability Steering committees
at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He is a member of the Corporate
Sustainability Network and Entrepreneurs 4 Sustainability (E4S).
MBDC—James H. Ewell, Director of Projects and External Relations
James Ewell, as Director of Consulting, is responsible for working with
companies to demonstrate the practicable value of implementing cradle-to-cradle
design principles within industry. MBDC’s consulting services range from
assisting companies to create and implement long-term sustainability platforms,
utilize alternative product design criteria, material selection guidance,
supply-chain integration, research on sector or issue-specific topics for
implementing sustainable strategies, and conducting workshops to educate
companies about the cradle to cradle design framework. James also assisted
in the launch of the non-profit organization, the GreenBlue Institute, where
he managed the eDesign Competition for the electronics industry and represented
GreenBlue in the creation of a pending standard from NSF International –
NSF 336 “Standard for the Assessment of Sustainable Commercial Furnishing
Fabrics”. During his tenure with MBDC, James has worked with many clients
to implement cradle-to-cradle design into their strategic planning and product
design processes. Some of his clients include Herman Miller Inc., Seventh
Generation, Shaw Industries, Victor Innovatex, WVU-Marcee Project, Volvo,
Ford Motor Co., P&G, Mars Inc., and the Action Sports Environmental Coalition
(ASEC). He has also worked with numerous clients to certify their products
under the Cradle to CradleSM Certification program. James received an M.A.
in Urban and Environmental Planning from the School of Architecture at the
University of Virginia prior to joining McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry
in 1998.
Penn State Smeal College of Business—Daniel Guide, Associate
Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, Department of Supply
Chain and Information Systems
Daniel Guide joined the faculty at the Smeal College of Business in the
fall of 2002. He was a visiting research fellow at INSEAD (2001-2003). His
research has appeared in numerous academic and managerial journals, including
Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Production
and Operations Management and Harvard Business Review. Professor Guide has
been a guest editor for feature issues of California Management Review (46(2)),
Interfaces (33(6)) and Production and Operations Management (forthcoming
in 2006) devoted to closed-loop supply chains. His research has been supported
by grants from the Carnegie Bosch Institute and the National Science Foundation.
He also regularly works with global organizations (including the US Navy,
Hewlett-Packard, Robert Bosch Tools, Cisco and Pitney Bowes, Inc.) on a
variety of closed-loop supply chain problems. His current research is focused
on the development and control of closed-loop supply chains, time-based
models for commercial product returns, remanufacturing and producer responsibility
legislation. He has a Ph.D. from The University of Georgia, and a B.S. and
M.S. from Clemson University.
Procter & Gamble—Brian Kirkpatrick, Director of Customer Supply,
P&G North America
Brian Kirkpatrick has been a member of Procter & Gamble’s Product Supply
organization for more than 23 years. He is currently in P&G’s North America
Market Development organization, serving as Director of Customer Supply.
Mr. Kirkpatrick is responsible for identifying and implementing leading
edge strategies and solutions with leading North American retailers. Prior
to his current position, Mr. Kirkpatrick has held various logistics and
manufacturing positions across P&G’s business units.
Procter & Gamble—Bill Tarlton, Supply Chain R&D Manager, P&G
Beauty Care
Bill Tarlton has been a member of Procter & Gamble’s manufacturing team
for more than 29 years. He is currently in P&G’s Beauty Care business unit,
serving as Supply Chain R&D Manager. Mr. Tarlton is responsible for identifying
and implementing leading edge strategies and solutions across P&G Beauty’s
end-to-end consumer-driven supply network – from suppliers through retailers.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Tarlton has held various logistics and
manufacturing positions in many of the individual Health and Beauty businesses.
He is recognized throughout P&G as a thought-leader in supply chain management.
UT-Austin, Cockrell School of Engineering—Kristin Wood, Professor,
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Kris Wood joined the faculty in 1989 where he is currently a Professor of
Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Systems and Design Division. Dr. Wood
has a M.S. and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology and a B.S.
from Colorado State University. He was a National Science Foundation Young
Investigator and is currently the “Cullen Trust for Higher Education Endowed
Professor in Engineering,” “University Distinguished Teaching Professor,”
and the Director of the Manufacturing and Design Laboratory (MaDLab). Example
applications of this research include the development of unmanned aerial
vehicles, micro-electro-mechanical systems, and flexible consumer products.
UT-Austin, McCombs School of Business—Ty Henderson, Assistant
Professor, Department of Marketing
Ty Henderson’s research investigates consumer choice and sales promotion
strategy in the context of public goods and cause related marketing. Additional
research interests include non-compensatory choice models, Bayesian statistics,
and new behavioral measurement technologies. Ty’s research has appeared
in Marketing Science. Prior to entering academia, Ty played an instrumental
role in two start-up companies; one focused on providing constituent management
solutions and the other specializing in telecommunications consulting. He
has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
UT-Austin, McCombs School of Business—Prabhudev Konana, Professor,
Department of Information, Risk, & Operations Management
Prabhudev Konana is a Professor of Information Management, Distinguished
Teaching Professor, and Assistant Director for Center for Research in Electronic
Commerce. He received his MBA and Ph.D. in management information systems
from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and an undergraduate degree in chemical
engineering from University of Mysore, India. His research and teaching
interests are in global sourcing, e-business value assessment, supply chain
management, virtual communities, design of next generation electronic brokerages,
and online investing.
