Directions for using DFD Stencil with Visio Pro

 

  1. Unzip the file you downloaded from the class web site (DFDStencil.zip)
  2. Open the file with Visio Pro
  3. You will notice a green bar with DFD symbols on the left side
  4. To create a DFD, click on <File>, <New>, <New Drawing>.  You may have to resize the left margin of the page if it covers up your stencil area.
  5. To use any of the stencil elements drag and drop them onto the work area
  6. Other useful items are the line tool, text tool, and pointer tool located at the top of the screen.

Ø      Line Tool – useful for drawing straight lines between elements of your DFD

Ø      Text Tool – useful for adding text descriptions of the data flows within your DFD, as well as Title Information

Ø      Pointer Tool – this tool must be enabled before you can resize many elements of your DFD

  1. To create directional arrows- first highlight the line you created by clicking on

the line with the line tool enabled, next click on the line ends button ( picture of three arrows on it) and select the arrow direction and style you wish to use
