About the Department of Accounting

The first Accounting course at the University of Texas at Austin was offered in 1912. Twenty students enrolled; 15 passed. The nine decades that have followed have been marked by rigorous courses, high academic standards and growing national stature of accounting education programs at the University.

Our doctoral (Ph.D.) program had its inception in 1934. Our Master in Professional Accounting (MPA) program was founded in 1948, and our 150-hour Professional Program in Accounting (PPA), which leads to the concurrent awarding of both a BBA and MPA degree, was inaugurated in 1985.
