Accounting Courses for MBA Students

Many MBA students should take additional accounting courses beyond this core. All MBA students take BA 384T (introductory financial accounting) in their first semester and BA 380E (one-half semester of introductory managerial accounting) in their third semester. The links above describe ideal course sequences and elective courses available in financial accounting and managerial accounting.

Those preparing for a career in investments (including institutional lending) should take as much additional financial accounting as possible. In a world of no constraints, you would take ACC 380D (combined intermediate and advanced) before ACC 380K.7 (financial statement analysis). However, BA 384T (introductory financial) is the only pre-requisite for both courses, so they can be taken in any sequence if scheduling conflicts necessitate that approach. Please note that many financial institutions will not interview students unless they have taken the equivalent of ACC 380D.

Corporate finance students should try to include ACC 387.4 (strategic control systems) and ACC 380D (intermediate and advanced). Please note that BA 380E (introductory managerial) is a pre-requisite for ACC 387.4 (strategic control systems).

Marketing and management students should take ACC 387.4 (strategic control systems).

*MBA students who wish to take more in-depth accounting can take ACC 380K.1 and ACC 380K.2, which are intermediate and advanced accounting, respectively. These courses are offered primarily to students enrolled in the PPA and MPA programs, but can be taken by MBA’s with permission of the PPA/MPA office advisors.
