The speaker was Mr. Robert Mednick. (The outline of Mr. Mednick's speech is available.) Mr. Mednick was awarded the American Institute of CPAs' Gold Medal for Distinguished Service, the AICPA's highest honor, in 1998. His remarkable contributions to the CPA profession include service on the Auditing Standards Board, Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council, AICPA Strategic Planning Committee, Committee on SEC Regulations, Legal Liability Committee (Chairman), Mission Committee, Finance Committee (Chairman), Political Leadership Cabinet and SEC Practice Section Executive Committee, and culminated in his Chairmanship of the AICPA Board of Directors in 1996-97.
A lifelong Chicago resident, Bob joined Arthur Andersen in 1962 following his graduation from Roosevelt University and was admitted to the partnership in 1971. In 1998, he retired from Andersen Worldwide as managing partner -- professional and regulatory matters (1993-98) and chairman of the worldwide committee on professional standards (1982-98). In connection with his retirement, the firm published a book, Keeping the Legacy Alive, containing 19 insightful articles he authored between 1979 and 1997.
Bob also serves on the boards of several civic and charitable organizations including the National Bureau of Economic Research, Roosevelt University, the Auditorium Theatre, Lake Shore Drive Synagogue and Chicago Action for Soviet Jewry. He is also currently on the faculty of Northwestern University and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.
A reception in the atrium of the College of Business Administration Building followed the ceremony.
