Doctoral Program: Application Procedure
Process and TimelineSTEP 1: Follow on-line application instructions
STEP 2: Send official documents and application fee to GIAC
STEP 3: Send materials directly to the Department of Accounting
PROCESS AND TIMELINE
Beginning each January, the Department of Accounting Ph.D. Admissions Committee reviews Ph.D. applications for admission to the doctoral program the following fall, with the goal of forming an entering class of three to five new Ph.D. students. Admissions are based on a balanced consideration of multiple factors, including academic credentials, GMAT scores, work experience, the personal statement of goals and objectives, and recommendation letters. Financial aid is generally available, and all accounting Ph.D. applicants are automatically considered for financial aid.
Applications with all materials received by the Department of Accounting before January 15 receive highest priority for admissions and financial aid consideration. Applications received after January 15 are considered on a space-available basis, depending on the outcomes of the files reviewed earlier. The application steps are as follows:Top of Page
STEP 1: Follow on-line application instructions
Go to www.applytexas.org and follow all on-line application instructions indicated at that website (may not be available until Sept. 1). We ask that all Ph.D. applicants use the on-line procedure to provide general application information.
STEP 2: Send official documents and application fee to GIAC
Send or request that the information listed below be sent to the University of Texas Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC), at the following address:
GIAC Postal Address:
UT Graduate and International Admissions (GIAC)
The University of Texas at Austin
P.O. Box 7608
Austin, Texas 78713-7698
GIAC Courier Address:
UT Graduate and International Admissions (GIAC)
The University of Texas at Austin
2608 Whitis Avenue
Austin, Texas 78712-1534
- Official copies of transcripts from all previously attended universities.
- Official GMAT scores if not more than five years old (If you took the GMAT prior to 2005, UT's recipient code is 6882. However, if the GMAT you took was computer-based, UT's recipient code is 3964445.) What if my GMAT is more than five years old?
- Official TOEFL report (international applicants only)
- Application fee ($50.00 U.S. or $75.00 for international applicants)
STEP 3: Send materials directly to the Department of Accounting
In addition, send the following DIRECTLY to the PhD Coordinator at the Department of Accounting at the address shown below. This expedites the review of your application and avoids delays caused by the processing of material at the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC). If you do not send the following materials directly to the Department of Accounting, the review of your application can sometimes be delayed for several weeks, causing you to miss the January 15 deadline for priority consideration. Why is it necessary to send materials to both the Graduate Admissions Office and the Department of Accounting?
- Current resume, including academic background and relevant work experience
- Statement of Purpose of goals and objectives (generally about two pages in length), highlighting your particular interests within accounting and relevant credentials related to those interests. Although applicants can complete the Statement of Purpose as part of the general on-line application, it is difficult to read in printed form. Accordingly, the Department prefers that applicants send a hard copy of a professional looking Statement of Purpose directly to the Department.
- Photocopies of all transcripts from previous university education
- Photocopy of GMAT scores
- Three or more recommendations, in sealed and signed envelopes included with the other materials or sent directly to the Department (see address below) by those doing the recommendations. Click here for the suggested evaluation form. In addition to completing this form, recommenders are strongly advised to attach a letter of recommendation that comments on the applicant's potential as an accounting educator and researcher.
