WHY GET A PH.D. IN ACCOUNTING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN?

The most common aspiration of a Ph.D. graduate in accounting is to pursue a career as a university educator and researcher in the field. Accounting educators teach and conduct research across a wide variety of specializations, including financial reporting, management accounting, auditing and assurance services, taxation and accounting information systems.

Academic life involves research and writing as means of maintaining fresh insights, contributing to accounting knowledge, assembling an evidential basis for policies and practices of the accounting profession and opening major new sources of curriculum content. AUSTIN PROFILE
 
The University of Texas campus is situated in the downtown area of Austin—the capital of the State of Texas and home to over 750,000 citizens. Located in the foothills of the Texas Hill Country, it is nestled in the heart of the state's most scenic landscape—rolling hills, a beautiful inner city lake (one of five on the lower Colorado River) and the surrounding wooded countryside. The long summers and mild winters allow residents to enjoy outdoor recreational activities such as boating and swimming on nearby lakes, hiking, biking and organized sports almost year-round. THE UNIVERSITY
 
Established in 1883, the University is a major teaching and research institution. It is the largest member of The University of Texas System, which consists of seven general academic institutions and six health science centers. The University of Texas at Austin has grown from one building, two departments, eight faculty members and 221 students on a forty-acre tract to a campus of more than three hundred acres with more than 110 buildings. (It is still informally known as the Forty Acres, however.) Approximately 50,000 students attend the University, making it one of the largest universities in the world.

THE McCOMBS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

The McCombs School of Business is one of the nation's leading research and teaching institutions. Approximately 150 doctoral students are currently studying in one of five major areas of concentration—Accounting, Finance, Information Risks and Operations Management (IROM), Management and Marketing.

The Ph.D. programs at the McCombs School of Business strive to prepare doctoral candidates to assume positions in leading graduate schools of business or in research organizations. The programs place heavy emphasis on research skills and research quality but also value and train students to be excellent teachers. Successful students can expect to be recruited actively by top-ranked business schools.
