The Information Management (IM) area in the McCombs School is one of the top in the nation, in terms of the quality of faculty, research and its undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. programs. The MBA and undergraduate IM programs are highly successful programs that have developed innovative curriculums based at the intersection of IT, economics and strategy. The quality of the IM programs is reflected in the rankings by national publications. At the MBA level, the Wall Street Journal ranks the McCombs School fourth in Information Technology and second with technology industry recruiters, and The Financial Times lists McCombs in the "Top 10 for Information Technology." At the undergraduate level, U.S. News and World Report ranks the Management Information Systems (MIS) program third in the nation.

The MBA IM program focuses on developing business leaders who understand (1) how to leverage IT to create value for customers using improved business processes and innovative information design; and (2) the strategic, financial and economic implications of IT projects. The programs provide a strong foundation so that students can articulate the strategic and business value of IT beyond an IT-centric view and develop the expertise required to manage global resources and projects enabled through IT. Finally, the programs strive to provide an environment for students to promote entrepreneurial thinking and to develop leadership skills through activities such as extracurricular case competitions, projects for local organizations, practica devoted to specific managerial topics and independent studies.

The IM area benefits from advice supplied by the Information Management Advisory Council. This council is the consultative body for both our undergraduate and MBA IM programs and is composed of Presidents, CIOs, CFOs, Senior Vice Presidents and other high-level executives from both Texas and nationally-based firms. Council members provide insight on how information technology is being integrated into businesses and advice about what we can do to better prepare the students in our programs for their future roles in such an environment. We include non-CIOs as well as CIOs on the Advisory Council because we would like to understand the issues related to information management from as broad a perspective as possible.
