Ph.D. Program Structure and Requirements

Since the SCOM Ph.D. program is heavily oriented towards applying quantitative models, Ph.D. students need a strong mathematical background. Entering Ph.D. students are expected to be have knowledge in advanced calculus, linear algebra, and applied probability, demonstrated through prior course work (at the University of Texas or elsewhere). These prerequisites should be satisfied before completing the core courses.

In the first two years, the SCOM Ph.D. concentration emphasizes the development of modeling and methodological skills in optimization, stochastic processes, and economics, as well as the study of several research streams in supply chain and operations management. The program entails identifying a research problem, and completing a research paper by the second year. After the second year, students focus on their dissertation research, taking other advanced courses that are relevant to their research.
