NATURE AND PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
Students in the McCombs School of Business are required to complete an internship course. For Marketing and International Business majors, this course is MKT 353.

While there are numerous avenues through which a student could secure an internship, business students are encouraged to work with the Ford Career Center in the School of Business to begin their internship search.
The Career Advisors, through workshops and individual appointments, assist students with all aspects of their internship and career search - resumes, networking, company research, interviewing and more.
Please visit the Ford Career Center's web page or their office in CBA 2.116 for more information on their resources.
Once a student has set up an
internship, they may submit an
application to have it approved by the
department for MKT 353.
To apply:
- For more background information, students may read the internship manual online.
- Student completes online application.
- Student receives an email with approval/denial decision.
Please note:
- Applications for the internship class will not be approved for an internship that is completed - students should apply after obtaining an internship but before beginning work
- Students completing a summer internship will register for the fall internship course, but must apply for department approval before they begin working at the internship
Q: How will I know if
[internship] will work for MKT 353?
A: The easiest and most direct way is
to fill out the application and read
the decision. If an internship is
appropriate, it will be approved.
Students will receive an email directing them to a web page to view the decision on their application. Once their application is approved, the student will be eligible to add the course on UT Direct. The section and unique number for which they are approved will be listed on the decision web page. Students will only be able to add the unique number for which they were approved. This course has no closing limit for registration.
Students must work at least 6 weeks and at least 160 hours in the internship to fulfill the internship requirement. There are no other specific requirements for particular tasks you must perform, as every internship is unique.
6. COMPLETE THE MKT 353 COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students with approved applications will be notified via email about the time and location of required class meetings. The class will meet only once in the first few days of the semester, to set expectations for the course.
Students enrolled in this class are expected to:
- Undertake an internship during the semester or just prior to taking the course.
- Attend the class session at the beginning of the semester.
- Write a paper that is scholarly in nature, detailing activities performed, skills developed, and knowledge acquired during the internship.
EVALUATION:
The internship class will be graded on a credit/no credit basis. To receive credit, students must meet the internship work requirements and submit the three assignments (the journal, documentation form, and final report outline) on time and in accordance with the requirements for these assignments detailed in the course syllabus.
JOURNAL:
Students must keep a journal of their activities during the internship, giving an overview of the project(s) on which they work and the learning derived from the work. You must begin keeping an Internship Journal as soon as you begin working. Your entries may be daily at the beginning of the internship. As the internship evolves and your responsibilities stabilize, you might make less frequent entries. However, at least one journal entry is required for every week that you work. This weekly journal entry should include at least one learning outcome for that week, as detailed in the course syllabus.
The journal is meant to be more than a log of the tasks you perform. The objective of the journal is to insure that you are thinking about what you are doing and examining what you learn, and consider how the internship relates to your classes and personal career goals.
The Journal may be handwritten or typed and no particular format is necessary. A sample journal entry is available here.
INTERNSHIP DOCUMENTATION FORM:
At the completion of the internship, each employer must complete an Internship Documentation Form for documentation of hours worked and projects performed. This documentation form will also include space for assessment of the student's work, which the supervisor may complete at their company's discretion.
Students can download and print the Internship Documentation form from this web page as either a Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat PDF file.
It is recommended you have an extra copy made for your own records, if possible, so if somehow the original is misplaced, you will not need to track down your supervisor and have them complete it again.
WRITTEN REPORT:
A 10-page final written report must be turned by the date noted in the syllabus for that semester. The report must follow the final report outline. An outline of the final report is available here. The report will be evaluated in part on composition and grammar.
The Journal, Internship Documentation Form, and Written Report can be delivered in any of the following ways:
