Personal Essays
Essays are a critical means of assessing an applicant’s
motivation for attending the McCombs School of Business,
background and interests, communication
skills, and presentation skills. Essays should be carefully
written and free of typographical errors. All essays should
be a maximum length of two (2) sheets, double-spaced/front
side only of each sheet (when printing, font size no smaller
than 12 pt.).
For question #1 (all applicants):
Discuss your motivations and goals for pursuing a graduate
business education.
For question #2 (all applicants):
Discuss your career objectives and interests.
For Question #3 (Answer only if you plan on applying to more
than one of the MBA Programs offered by the University of
Texas at Austin)
Please write a response explaining how each can fulfill your
graduate school objectives as described in your earlier
essay.
Letters of Recommendation
References should speak to the applicant’s qualities, career potential, and potential to succeed in the classroom. They should know the applicant personally and be familiar with his or her work history, credentials, and career aspirations.
GMAT
All applicants must submit official Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) scores through Pearson. The University of Texas at Austin does not require a minimum score and enrolls candidates into our MBA Programs with a wide range. The GRE cannot substitute for the GMAT. GMAT scores are valid for five years. In addition to the GMAT, we will give consideration to other factors including your undergraduate academic performance, any graduate work, work experience, interview, recommendations and essays in the admissions process.
Applicants are encouraged to take the GMAT as early as possible to avoid processing delays. Applications are not considered complete – and cannot be evaluated – until official GMAT scores have arrived at UT. Applicants may take the GMAT as often as they wish (no more than once per calendar month). For those candidates who take the GMAT more than once, we will consider the highest score, rather than the average, when we consider your application.
To register for the GMAT, please visit: www.mba.com
The University of Texas at Austin offers a prep course for the GMAT. Please contact our office at 512-471-5893 if you are interested.
TOEFL (For Non-Native English Speakers)
Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and have their scores submitted directly form ETS to UT Austin. The TSA cannot substitute for the TOEFL. TOEFL scores are valid only for two years.
An official score on the TOEFL- a score of 550 (paper test)
or 213 (computer-based test) on the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) is considered the minimum
acceptable for admission to the University of Texas at
Austin.
If you hold bachelor's degrees from a U.S. institution or
from an institution in another English-only speaking
country, you will receive a waiver of the TOEFL.
Information concerning TOEFL schedules and test centers may
be obtained from U.S. consulates or binational cultural
centers in many countries or from the
TOEFL website.
