Emeritus of Accounting Dies
Dr. Glenn Welsch, professor emeritus of accounting at McCombs, died Oct.
27. A past president of the American Accounting Association, author of leading
textbooks and winner of multiple teaching awards, “Dr. Welsch was one of
the giants of academic accounting,” said Michael Granof, his former colleague.

McCombs Posts Inaugural
Assessment Measures
Under the school’s October 2003 strategic plan, McCombs set a goal of becoming
the best public business school in the nation by 2010. To measure progress
towards this goal, the school committed to reporting on metrics in three
areas: student placement, research productivity, and student satisfaction.
The first annual report has now been posted to the Web.

Simmons Says Energy Industry,
World Must Face Consequences of Depletion
In his 40 years in the energy industry, Matthew Simmons, chairman and CEO
of Simmons & Company International, has made it a point to talk about an
issue that no one wants to face: depletion. “We’re living in an enormous
energy illusion,” Simmons told students at the McCombs School.

Kinney Appointed to Public
Company Accounting Oversight Board’s Advisory Council
William Kinney, professor of accounting at the McCombs School, has been
tapped to join the advisory council of the Public Company Accounting Oversight
Board (PCAOB). Created by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the private-sector, non-profit
PCAOB oversees auditors of public companies in order to protect the interests
of investors. Kinney will be the only accounting professor on the council.

Wins International Business Challenge
A team of four students from the University of Minnesota won the 2004 International
Business Challenge, the annual undergraduate case competition organized
by BBA students at McCombs.

CEO Offers Insights on Southwest’s Record
Since the world’s first human flight in 1903, the airline industry has not
been very profitable, with one exception: Southwest Airlines. Speaking at
McCombs Nov. 10, Gary Kelly, the CEO of Southwest, discussed the role accounting
plays in the company’s ongoing success.

Raghunathan: Marketers Must
Adapt to the Experience Economy
For marketers, it may no longer be enough to simply anticipate your customer’s
needs. Speaking to the Austin chapter of the American Marketing Association
Oct. 19, Raj Raghunathan, a professor of marketing at McCombs, explained
that we now live in an “experience economy,” and marketers would be wise
to adjust their strategies accordingly.
