Cox Discusses Misrepresentation
of Adam Smith's Writings

By Chantelle Wallace
Scholars have “highly misrepresented” 18th century economist Adam Smith’s views, said Marketing Professor Eli Cox at the Oct. 17 Faculty Research Presentation Speaker Series. Cox has read all 3,900 pages of Smith’s published writings, as well as 10,000 pages about Smith and the subject of economics. “What I discovered was the Adam Smith I read about had very little bearing on the real Adam Smith—what he really said and believed,” Cox said.

McCombs Team Places First in NYU Stock Pitch Competition
Three members of the undergraduate Financial Analyst Program took first place in the Stock Pitch Competition held at New York University's Stern School of Business Oct. 14-15. Alex Morales, Katie Ross and Mark Tait, all finance seniors, were challenged to pitch a stock from an emerging market. The team chose Li Ning, a sports apparel, footwear and goods company from China, and spent the past several weeks developing a pitch for the company. The three students were selected to compete based on the strength of their applications and summer internships. Ross said her Goldman Sachs internship taught her that paying attention to details is crucial on Wall Street. “I learned what it means to work under intense pressure on the trading floor, so we were prepared in every aspect of our pitch for any tough questions that judges would grill us with,” she said

In the News: Martin Shares His Views on IBM Employee Restructure
KUT Radio, Oct. 11, 2006

Jeffery MartinDespite investing $6 billion into its operations in India this summer, IBM’s recent announcement that 100 employees have 30 days to find a different job within the company may not be due to outsourcing. Jeffrey Martin, McCombs management professor and former IBM employee, said a corporate culture of shifting people around is more likely the culprit behind cuts than moving jobs to India. “In the time that I worked for IBM people used to joke that IBM stood for ‘I’ve been moved,’” Martin said. “I think companies like IBM are trying to see what they can offshore, and what they cannot. I think the jury is still out as to whether or not really high end jobs like hardware engineering can be offshored.”
