Economist Cartoonist Draws on Life
Experience to Impart Humor
By Chantelle Wallace
Each day Kevin “Kal” Kallaugher faces what he describes as the
most intimidating thing known to man—a blank piece of paper. The
famed Economist cartoonist spoke Oct. 23 of his 28-year career
with the magazine he called “the preeminent news publication on
the planet.” “I view the political cartoon as a column,”
Kallaugher said. “My job isn’t to make you laugh, it’s to make
you think. Humor is a vehicle for the message.”

Forensic Accountant Golden Talks Fraud
with McCombs Students
By Rob Meyer
Thomas Golden, a forensic accounting expert at
PricewaterhouseCoopers, shared tales of fraud and deceit with an
overflow audience of McCombs accounting students Oct. 18 as part
of the Fall 2006 Lyceum Speakers Series. “Most of these
white-collar criminals have no intention of causing anyone
harm,” said Golden, whose investigations have taken him across
the nation as well as to Ecuador, Indonesia, Brazil, Venezuela,
India and the United Arab Emirates. “Most of these crooks are
truly sorry and most appear to be otherwise good people—which
really complicates the job of the auditor.”

In the News: Golf Course
Provides Venue for Business Deals and Character Assessment
Washington Times, Oct. 21, 2006
Skills on the putting green may be on par with expertise in the
boardroom. An increasing number of business schools offer
classes aimed at improving their students’ golf-course acumen.
The University of Texas at Austin's Kinesiology Department
offers the Golf for Business and Life Program, a Professional
Golfers' Association of America (PGA) instructional golf
program. The classes are taught by PGA professionals and funded
by 1999 Ryder Cup winners and UT Austin alumni Ben Crenshaw and
Justin Leonard, BBA ’94. The university has 15 sections
of the class with up to 50 students in each section, said Bob
Childress, UT Austin campus relations and special projects
coordinator.
