Morrice Selected to Succeed Shively as Chair of IROM Department
Doug Morrice
will become chair of the Department of Information, Risk, and Operations Management Sept. 1, 2007. Morrice joined the McCombs faculty in 1990 and, during his career at McCombs, has built a strong reputation as an accomplished teacher, scholar and service contributor. Morrice has also served in several administrative roles, including graduate adviser and as the director of the Supply Chain Management Consortium. Please congratulate Professor Morrice on this appointment, and thank Tom Shively for his five years of service to McCombs as the outgoing IROM chair.

Wheeler Named to Newly Created COO Position for Executive Education
Bob Wheeler
has been selected to be the chief operating officer for Executive Education. Wheeler will continue his responsibilities as the director of the Texas Evening MBA through the end of the academic year. Wheeler, as chief operating officer, will have day to day responsibilities for the internal operations of Executive Education and work closely with the program directors and offices in helping meet their needs. Prior to his role as director of the Texas Evening MBA, Wheeler served as the assistant dean and director of the MBA Program at Penn State.

Hughes to Replace Carner as Director of Business Foundations Program
Regina Hughes, senior finance lecturer, has been announced as the new director of the Business Foundations Program. As of June 1, Hughes will replace William Carner, senior marketing lecturer, who is leaving McCombs.

Spring is Here—Celebrate during the Hermes Spring Fling
McCombs will be transformed into a spring festival Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. Find out who Hermes is, enjoy food and free Blue Bell ice cream, try your hand at fun games and pick up a free Hermes T-shirt. Continental CEO Discusses Airline Business Post 9/11, Going Green

For four straight years, Continental Airlines has claimed the title of Fortune magazine’s “Most Admired Global Airline.” But it's not just the continued free services, such as meals and pillows, that helps the Houston-based carrier achieve this title. “Everything works at Continental because of our people,” said the company’s chairman and CEO Larry Kellner at his April 12 VIP Distinguished Speaker Series talk. “Business strategy isn’t as important as employees.”

Brandls Macro Updates Circles the Globe
Since 2003, Michael Brandl, senior finance lecturer, has published the e-mail newsletter “Macro Updates.” Brandl started the newsletter to keep former students in the know on major economic issues after they leave McCombs. In four years, it has grown in popularity and is now sent to more than 800 subscribers, with e-mail addresses as far away as Europe, Russia, China, India and Latin America. Recently, Brandl added a video component to Macro Updates, hosted by second-year MBA student Amanda Yates.

McCombs Students Earn High Marks at National Speech Tournament
The University of Texas at Austin Speech Team earned a fifth national title in Impromptu Speaking at the 2007 American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament. Business honors senior Jill Collum was recognized as The University of Texas at Austin’s 25th American Forensic Association National Champion, winning Impromptu Speaking. This was the third consecutive year a University of Texas at Austin student has won the championship in that category. Additionally, two McCombs School students — Collum and business honors senior Rina Shah—were recognized as American Forensic Association All-Americans, an honor bestowed on only 17 students this year. International business senior Ashley Hatcher was a National Finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking and National Quarter-Finalist in Impromptu Speaking. Sandip Gupta, marketing senior, was also a National Finalist in Impromptu Speaking.

In the News: Waterloo Records Celebrates 25 Years
KUT Radio, April 13, 2007
Since opening its doors in 1982, Waterloo records has been a part of the musical landscape in Austin, and the store celebrated its 25th anniversary April 15 with a big bash at its downtown location at 6th and Lamar. Jim Nolen, senior finance lecturer, said one reason Waterloo has been able to thrive while national chains have faltered in Austin is Waterloo has always highlighted Texas music. “There’s a culture in Austin to buy locally,” he said.
