  Symposium Examines Marketer’s Role in Sustainability Initiatives
Brewster McCrackenHow can green initiatives and environmentally sustainable business practices win out in the marketplace? That question served as the springboard for a lively two-day discussion on the state of corporate social responsibility Sept. 27-28. Taking part in the conversation were academics, students, corporate representatives and at least one politician (Austin City Council Member Brewster McCracken, right). All of the participants agreed that initiatives in sustainability must be accountable for helping the bottom line. Green has to be green and green means dollars, said Victor Welch, director of the Corporate Marketing Initiatives Group at GE.

McCombs Announces New BBA Alumni Network
With 11 years of success supporting the McCombs MBA Alumni (MMA) Network, the school will extend this effort to BBA alumni by establishing the McCombs BBA Alumni (MBBA) Network. The MBBA Network will connect alumni to each other and to McCombs, enhance the student experience through interaction with alumni, and provide lifelong learning opportunities. The MBBA Network will leverage MMA Network best practices to develop a strong organization that provides valuable opportunities for BBA alumni.

TXU Vice Chairman Discusses Deregulation of Electricity, Going Private
Tom Baker, TXUWith the recent deregulation of the electrical industry and the high profile, $32 billion private equity buyout of TXU Corp., the company’s vice chairman says it’s an exciting time to be part of the company. Tom Baker should know. He’s been with TXU for 36 years and in the industry since 1968 when he stepped off The University of Texas at Austin campus as a mechanical engineering graduate and showed up at a “new campus” the following Monday as a plant engineer with Dallas Power & Light.

In the News: Full-time Texas MBA Ranked by Economist Intelligence
The Economist Intelligence released its annual global rankings of full-time MBA programs last week. The McCombs School received a global rank of 45 (up from 55 last year). Among U.S. schools, McCombs ranks 25 (up from 33). The survey considers four criteria: gauge of effectiveness at opening new career opportunities, personal development and educational experience, increase in salary, and potential to network.

In the News: Martorana Addresses Women’s Issues in the Workplace
The Galveston County Daily News, Sept. 27, 2007

Paul Martorana, assistant professor of management, opened Galveston College’s fall lecture series with a discussion on issues that women face in the workplace. Martorana said current research shows that, despite progress for women, a glass ceiling still exists, especially in terms of board membership positions and the percentage of female CEOs. Some organizations, however, have instated policies and processes encouraging women to secure leadership positions.

In the News: The Longhorn Economy

This year, the UT Athletics Department will for the first time spend more than $100 million. Thats double the amount it spent just six years ago. Since 2000, sports expenses have grown twice as fast as UT Austin spending overall. This is “a degree of extravagance that is totally out of whack with what transpires in the rest of the university, said McCombs accounting professor Michael Granof, who points to sports facilities he terms beyond opulence. He, along with other reformers, has proposed merging athletics into the universitys general fund so its rapidly growing expenditures can be reviewed alongside other departments budgets.
