  Infosys Founder Murthy Visits McCombs, Shares Life Lessons
Narayana Murthy, chairman of the board and chief mentor of Infosys Technologies Limited, spoke to a small group of McCombs faculty Nov. 15. Murthy started Infosys in 1981 with six others and served as the CEO for 21 years. Infosys was founded with $250 and the goal to be respected by all of the companys stakeholders, from customers to shareholders to government and educational leaders. “Im glad we took that position in 1981,” Murthy said. “If you want to be in business for a long time, you have to live in harmony with society.”

Martin Honored with Best Paper Award from Strategic Management Society

Jeffrey Martin, assistant professor of management, and his co-author have been awarded the 2007 Dan and Mary Lou Schendel Best Paper Prize by the Strategic Management Society for “Dynamic Capabilities: What Are They?” which was published in 2000. The awards citation reads, Through its continuing citation and overall impact, their paper has stood the test of time and proven its value to the field of strategic management.”

McCombs Earns Clean Sweep in Rankings by Public Accounting Report
McCombs made it a clean sweep again this year in the rankings from the Public Accounting Report, taking the No. 1 spot on the lists of the most admired undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in the United States, according to the publication’s 26th annual survey of accounting professors. The survey asks accounting professors, department heads and department chairs to name the undergraduate and graduate programs they feel most consistently turn out students capable of someday attaining partner status.

Sam Laine, McCombs School of BusinessHermes, Mascot of McCombs, Featured in Longhorn ID Segment
The history and role of Hermes, the McCombs School's mascot, was featured in On Campus’ Longhorn ID series. Hermes has been the mascot of the business school since 1922, reports Sam Laine, master of professional accounting student. Laine is the current “Hermes” who represents McCombs at various functions around campus.

In the News: Konana Says India Needs “Cautious Optimists” Moving Forward
The Hindu, Nov. 16, 2007

Prabhudev KonanaIn an op-ed published by The Hindu newspaper in India, Prabhudev Konana, IROM professor, argues India is best led by “cautious optimists” rather than “optimists,” “pessimists” or “doubters.” Konana writes, “Cautious optimists recognize that inclusive economic development, managed liberalization and global trade are necessary steps to have sustainable progress. Cautious optimists recognize that meaningful development cannot be achieved without broad-based investments in infrastructure, education and healthcare.”

In the News: McCombs Undergrads Provide Consulting to Austin Businesses

Fotini and Fernando LaGuardia have baked empanadas out of their mom-and-pop catering business in Austin for 10 years. Now, with the help of four McCombs students, the couple can add award-winning marketing to their business strategy. Four students were assigned to help Empanadas La Boca improve its marketing as part of a Student Consulting Initiative competition that concluded Saturday, Nov. 17. Team Maverick, which included Monica Ridgway, marketing and business honors junior; Yun Du, management information systems and business honors junior; Chad Zidow, accounting and business honors junior; and Alex Schliker, finance and business honors junior, won the competition.

In the News: MBA Alum Shines as Sports Marketing All-Star

, MBA 89, admits to being one of the few football players at Shawnee Mission East in the late 1970s who attended his school’s boys soccer games. “I went and watched the soccer games because my best friend in high school, Tom McCarthy, was the keeper on the soccer team,” Quinn says. “But basically, I was the guy who sat behind the goal and heckled the players.” Back then, it was just a way any high school kid would turn out to support a buddy. But, as it’s turned out, it also could have been a harbinger. Today, about 27 years after becoming a soccer fan strictly by association, Quinn is president of Soccer United Marketing, the marketing arm and partner not only of Major League Soccer, but professional soccer associations and endeavors in the United States, Mexico, Europe and beyond.

In the News: Students Compete in Mr. McCombs Pageant During Business Week
The Daily Texan, Nov. 12, 2007

McCombs students recently competed in a battle of wit and skill for the “Around the World” Mr. McCombs Pageant. The contestants represented student organizations within McCombs and faced off in categories such as casual wear, talent and formal wear. The Undergraduate Business Council hosted the pageant as part of its Business Week. “Its a great way to bring the business school together,” said event co-chair and finance junior Stephanie Stratz. Finance lecturer and judge Pamela Friedman said she was looking for “a mixture of looks, skill and talent that would represent the school well.” The judges decided that Mr. Asian Business Students Association, marketing senior Julian Maldonado, had the right mix. I absolutely feel like a celebrity,he said. Pictured is Michael Koetting, Mr. Freshman Business Association.
