BBA Study Abroad Photos Showcase Student Adventures

McCombs students take in Mt. Batur in Bali, Indonesia

The Undergraduate Programs Office is a holding a photo contest from the exciting travels, experiences and adventures of those who studied abroad in the summer and fall of 2007, which included about 85 McCombs students attending classes at 23 of our 27 partner institutions. To date, McCombs remains the college at UT which coordinates the highest percentage of international exchanges, both for inbound and outbound students. Prentice Paper Wins Ethics Award

Robert PrenticeRobert Prentice, business law professor, received the Investment Management Consultants Association’s 2008 Richard Davis Ethics Award for his paper, “Ethical Decision Making: More Needed Than Good Intentions,” which appeared in Financial Analysts Journal 63, No. 6, November/December 2007. The award honors the author of an article that makes a significant contribution to advancing the understanding and knowledge of the investment management consulting profession in the area of ethics.

 

Media: Granof Says Accounting Research Should Learn From Past

Michael GranofAccounting Professor Michael Granof contributed a column to the Chronicle of Higher Education analyzing the status of academic research on accounting. Excerpt: “The narrow focus of today’s research has resulted in a disconnect between research and teaching. Because of the difficulty of conducting publishable research in certain areas — such as taxation, managerial accounting, government accounting, and auditing — Ph.D. candidates avoid choosing them as specialties. Thus, even though those areas are central to any degree program in accounting, there is a shortage of faculty members sufficiently knowledgeable to teach them.” Read more.

 

Brandl’s Macro Updates Look at Bear Stearns Fallout

Michael BrandlMichael Brandl, senior lecturer in finance, brings his popular Macroeconomic Updates newsletter, which has more than 2,000 subscribers, to the YouTube generation. In three recent postings, Brandl discusses the ramifications of the Federal Reserve actions in negotiating a Bear Stearns buyout and the differences in the economic policies of the presidential candidates.

117 International Companies, 25 Nationalities,
One Texas Executive Education Program

International Group of Students from Executive Education Custom ProgramHigh energy and enthusiasm were in abundance during “Leading for Innovation,” the international program organized by Texas Executive Education for the ESCP-EAP European School of Management in France, Feb. 25-29 in Austin. This year’s program featured an executive MBA group of 130 students representing 117 international companies and 25 nationalities. Read more.

 

MBA Students Rise to Top in National Net Impact Case Competition

Case Competition finalists

After advancing out of the preliminary round comprised of 56 MBA teams from business programs across the U.S. and Canada, McCombs first-year MBA students, (left to right in picture) Megan Clark, Joe Jordan and Shalou Dhamija reached the 7th Annual Leeds Net Impact Case Competition finals at the University of Colorado at Boulder Feb. 22-23, 2008. There the team confronted a business case that revolved around sustainability and challenged participants to develop a strategy for Sun Microsystems to increase its revenues in the “Green IT” space by $1 billion in three years. In Colorado, the McCombs team competed against top schools including UC Berkeley, University of Chicago and Northwestern, winning 3rd place overall and $2,000 in prize money. Congratulations and great work in helping McCombs build a nationally-recognized sustainable business program!
