Slideshow: Stem Cell Team Wins 25th Moot Corp

Moot Corp winners with Rob Adams

NeuroBank, from Carnegie Mellon University, beat out 37 teams from 14 countries to win the $100,000 Global Champion prize on May 3. The company has developed a breakthrough technology for minimally invasive extraction, isolation, expansion and cryopreservation of adult neural stem cells. Qcue, the Texas champion, was named second runner-up.

Dean Gau Honored at Going Away Reception

Dean George GauMcCombs faculty and staff gathered at the UT Club on May 5 to honor Dean George Gau and his service to the school. Highlights included a slideshow of photos from his childhood to present day, a tribute video, speeches and the presentation of three baseballs signed by members of the Chicago Cubs, his favorite baseball team. Friends and colleagues commended Gau for his commitment to McCombs and his innovative leadership.

Kristie LoescherKristie Loescher, management lecturer, was featured in a Nightline segment about an Austin advertising agency, T3, which allows employees to bring their babies to work for the first year. Loescher said the policy isn't just good for employees; it's also good for the bottom line. "You get the benefits of retention, hopefully the benefit of less absenteeism, the person can come to work every day because they're bringing the baby and also there's an interesting fact that job satisfaction can increase because you're feeling a real loyalty to an employer who's letting you do this.”

Ten Faculty Earn Teaching and Research Awards

Caroline BartelThe 2007-08 McCombs teaching and research awards were handed out at a lunchtime ceremony May 6. This year’s honorees for teaching are: Michael Granof, Joe D. Beasley Award for MBA Teaching Excellence; Prabhudev Konana and Regina Hughes, Hank & Mary Harkins Foundation Award for Effective Teaching in Undergraduate Classes; Caroline Bartel (left), Trammell/CBA Foundation Teaching Award for Assistant Professors; Michael Luchs and Benjamin Herndon, Fred Moore Assistant Instructor Award for Teaching Excellence; John Daly, Fawn & Vijay Mahajan Teaching Excellence Award for Executive Education; and Michael Brandl, CBA Foundation Advisory Council Award for Teaching Innovation. The awards for research were given to Raj Raghunathan, Award for Research Excellence; and Aydogan Alti, CBA Foundation Research Excellence Award for Assistant Professors. Congratulations!

Executive Education Launches New Corporate Partnership Program

Texas Executive Education is pleased to announce a new corporate partnership initiative that will provide companies with an innovative way to manage their training and development dollars, and take advantage of the tremendous resources of Executive Education, the McCombs School and The University of Texas at Austin. The initiative features pricing discounts, concierge level services, advisory opportunities and many other benefits. It has been designed to provide a comprehensive and easily administrated executive education plan. Seats can be purchased at any time throughout the year and additional seats can be added at a prorated cost. Seats may be used in any of the two-day open enrollment programs and can be used cumulatively toward any certificate programs. Additionally, companies can expect a flexible billing system and custom seamless registration.

Outstanding Employees Honored at 2008 Staff Excellence Awards

Diane AllenOn May 5, the McCombs School recognized outstanding employee performance at the 2008 Staff Excellence Awards. Congratulations to this year’s winners on a job well done: Doreen Ip-Pong (Management), Tim Matthews Staff Excellence Award; Velma Arney (BBA Career Services), Student Services Award; Vinh Nguyen (MPA Career Services), Award for Outstanding Service to McCombs Constituents; and Diane Allen (right, MBA Program Office), Jeanne Brown Award, for a staff member with at least 15 years of university service who has demonstrated outstanding performance of job responsibilities and unselfish dedication to duty.
