Update: Reunion 2004
Classes of 1994 and 1999 returned to Austin from April 2 – 4 for their five and
ten-year reunions. We kicked off the weekend with the McCombs Community BBQ on
Friday night where the alumni caught up with each other and mingled with current
and prospective students, faculty, and staff. On Saturday, they toured the
b-school, heard from students who traveled on Plus Global tours, and spoke with
Dean Gau about the state of the school. Saturday night, the Class of ’94 took a
boat cruise, and the ’99s hung out at their old haunt: the Cedar Door. Thanks to
all who contributed and attended.

Preview Weekend—A Sneak Peak into the Class of 2006
Preview Weekend 2004 was a great success! 165 prospective students
came to McCombs for Preview Weekend—an increase in numbers from last year. Many of
them expressed their intent to enroll. (Historically, our yield from Preview is
around 75 percent.) Almost everyone who attended had participated in admissions
interviews, and close to 60 percent were with alumni. The weekend’s events
included the McCombs Community BBQ, panels on student life, classes, tours, and
a student organization fair. On Saturday, four alumni participated in the
first-ever Preview Alumni Panel. Many thanks to Ludy Cuello, MBA '03, Andy Land,
MBA '98, Amy McMichael, MBA '01, and Ben Opps, MBA '03 for their insight.

New York Times Op-Ed: Sitting Out the Scandals
By Michael Granof
In Monday's New York Times, McCombs professor of accounting
Michael Granof proposes an aid for "the tarnished reputation of
college sports ... [A]pply the lessons of Enron and Arthur
Andersen to collegiate athletics." Granof suggests that university
presidents be held accountable for athletics programs just as
Sarbanes-Oxley puts CEO's on the hook for accounting standards.

McCombs MBA Drops, Exec MBA Rises in U.S. News Rankings
U.S. News & World Report released its latest MBA rankings on
Friday, April 2. McCombs dropped from #17 to #23 due to last
year’s placement numbers. As in recent years, the school performed
well in other areas of the survey. The Executive MBA rose from #14
to #13. The Texas Evening MBA made its first appearance, also at
#13, in the new part-time MBA ranking. And McCombs received top 20
rankings in nine of the ten business specialties: accounting (2),
information systems (3), entrepreneurship (8), marketing (12),
productions/operations (13), finance (16), supply chain/logistics
(16), international (17), and management (18). Only nine schools
in the country rank in this many categories.

MBA Programs at Harvard, Wharton to Curb Participation in
Influential Surveys
In Wednesdays Wall Street Journal, Harvard and Wharton announced
that they will no longer be providing their student and alumni
contact information to the media—including the major rankings and
survey publishers. Citing privacy and cost concerns, the schools
also expressed their concern about the validity of the data
collected and the rankings themselves. Despite the fact that they
will still provide basic, public information and statistics, this
move will increase the difficulty in compiling the data and will
likely affect the reliability and impact of these surveys. Many
other top business schools are expected to follow suit.
