Arianna
Bassoli
Research Fellow
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Arianna Bassoli is currently working as a Research
Fellow in the Human Connectedness group at Media Lab
Europe, the European research partner of the MIT Media
lab. She has a first class honour degree in
Communication Sciences from the University of Siena,
Italy. In the past, she was involved in a localized
development of interactive television, and she worked as
content producer in the local cable television of Siena
(RCS). She has also collaborated as a journalist with a
number of Italian newspapers. Since she started to work
for Media Lab Europe two years and a half ago, she put
aside her interests in content production to focus on
the potential that digital media have in shaping social
changes. Her main interest lies in researching the
possibility to use wireless technologies and mobile
devices to better connect people on a local scale.
Coming from a mass media background, she is now very
fascinated by the potential that peer-to-peer
applications have to decentralise the production and
distribution of multimedia content, and to support
grassroots phenomena. Before starting the tunA project a
year ago, she worked on a project called WAND (Wireless
Ad Hoc Network for Dublin), a collaboration between
Media Lab Europe and Trinity College Dublin, whose aim
was to create a testbed network for new ad-hoc
applications and services that could integrate with the
interests and needs of the local communities. For this
project she also conducted a local study to inform the
application development, of which tunA can be considered
as an output. about tunA: tunA is a mobile wireless
application that allows users to share their music
locally through handheld devices. Users can "tune in" to
other nearby tunA music players and listen to what
someone else is listening to. Developed on iPaqs and
connected via 802.11b in ad-hoc mode, the application
displays a list of people using tunA that are in range,
gives access to their profile and playlist information,
and enables synchronized peer-to-peer audio streaming.

for the planning, installation and operation of CWRUnet
(Case’s campus network), communication services (data,
video and voice), and the campus multi-media services
(audio/video, cable television, digital
photography/illustration).
Dell joined Case in 1981 as the Director of the
Andrew R. Jennings Computing Center, responsible for the
central academic computing resources and campus data
communication. His position changed to the Director of

least 1 Gbps to the appliance) that formed the basis for
the 1988 planning and development of Case’s all fiber
network. In 1988, Dell directly oversaw the design,
planning and deployment of today’s CWRUnet physical
wiring plant. The plant encompasses over 3,000 miles of
fiber optic cables, with single-mode and multi-mode
fiber running to each faceplate.
Prior to joining Case, Dell was Assistant Director
for Academic Computing at Wayne County Community
College; Technical Specialist for Instruction at
Cuyahoga Community College; an Assistant Professor of
Mathematics Education at Wittenberg University, and

LambdaRail and Great Lakes Light Rail organizations.
Dell’s insight helped start OARnet in 1987, which today
serves Ohio’s colleges, universities, libraries, state
and local government agencies, and related
technology-based organizations with communication
services, including Internet and Internet2 connectivity.

Richard MacKinnon is the President of Austin Wireless, a
Texas non-profit organization with the dual roles of
public education and community-network operation. The
wireless user’s group meets monthly to host industry
speakers and maintains an extremely active discussion

Before assuming the leadership of Austin Wireless,
Rich founded the Austin Wireless City Project, an ad hoc
volunteer organization with the mission of improving the
quality and availability of public free WiFi in Austin.
Under his leadership of both organizations, they were
merged into a single entity. Today, after only 5 months
of operation, the community-owned and volunteer-operated
network includes 27 hotspots and over 4000 registered
users who combine for over 100 daily connections. The
network is adding approximately 50 new users per day, 1
new venue per week, and has sustained bi-weekly usage
growth averaging 15%.

company which creates easily deployed, customer-branded
Free WiFi hotspots at your favorite hang-outs
everywhere. The venues own their hotspot and manage it
with simple web tools. Hotspot software lets venues
communicate with their customers and keep logs on WiFi
usage. Users gain access to all Less Networks powered
hotspots and have the ability to chat with other users
logged in from home or other venues.
