Schlumberger Ltd. renames its 'smart card' unit Axalto

Schlumberger Ltd. on Monday renamed its Austin-based "smart card" unit Axalto in preparation for a sale or initial public offering next year. Austin is the headquarters for the North and South American operations of Axalto, which employs 100 people in Austin and about 1,100 worldwide. Axalto is a provider in technology and applications for smart cards, which contain computer chips that carry secure information about the user, such as detailed medical information or computer access codes. Other applications include cash for vending machines, public transportation and wireless phones.
