Dr. Eric Hirst’s research interests center on the role of financial reporting in investor and professional analyst judgment and decision making. Prior to his return to academe, he worked as a public accountant Thorne Riddell in Toronto, where his clients were in the extractive industries. A faculty member at UT since 1991, he teaches the MBA core course in financial reporting and an elective course in financial statement analysis. In addition, Eric has taught in UT’s Executive MBA Programs in Mexico City and Dallas. Eric was a Visiting Professor of Accounting and Control at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Eric has been recognized for Teaching Excellence in the MBA Core at UT and INSEAD and the Executive MBA Program in Mexico City. He has developed and taught programs for executives in Asia, Europe, and throughout the Americas for KPMG, Dow Chemical, 3M, Texas Instruments, USAA, Motorola and other major companies.
Dr. Hirst has published numerous articles in scholarly journals including Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. He serves on the editorial board of The Accounting Review and was Associate Editor at Contemporary Accounting Research.
He was awarded the College of Business Administration Award for Research Excellence for Assistant Professors in 1997 and the McCombs School of Business Award for Research Excellence in 2003. From 2001 to 2004 he served on the American Accounting Association’s Financial Accounting Standards Committee (chairing the group in 2003-2004), a committee responsible for writing comment letters on new accounting standards to the FASB and IASB.
