How to Tie a Tie
For business attire, your tie should be conservative and
accent your suit. But no matter how good-looking your tie is,
you must know how to tie it right!
There are several ways to tie your tie—the four-in-hand, half
Windsor, and bow tie. Bow ties are not generally acceptable for
business attire.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to tie the most widely used tie
style, the four-in-hand:
Look at yourself in the mirror:
 |
- Start with the wide end of the tie on your right and
extend it a foot below the narrow end.
|
| |
 |
- Cross the wide end over the narrow end and
then back underneath the narrow end.
|
| |
 |
- Continue wrapping around, passing the wide
end across the front of the narrow end once more.
|
| |
 |
- Pass the wide end up through the loop.
|
| |
 |
- Hold the front of the knot loose with your
index finger, then pass the wide end down through the loop
in front.
|
| |
 |
- Remove your index finger and tighten the
knot carefully. Draw the tie up to your collar by holding
the narrow end and sliding the knot up snugly.
