Valparaiso

We left for Isla Negra at 9:00 am.  Our trip through the valleys west of Santiago on the way to Isla Negra and Viña del Mar was like taking a trip through the Napa and Sonoma valleys in Northern California.  The terrain and level of development looked like the wine country of California nearly 20 years ago.  After living in California and seeing how land costs have skyrocketed in the last 15 years, I could not help but think that there was an opportunity for real estate development or land speculation near Santiago (Chad).

I loved the tour of Pablo Neruda’s house, particularly because of the location and the views.  I couldn’t believe how much the coast line looked like the northern coast of California with the cliffs and rocky shores.  I understand why Neruda loved that place and felt inspired to write poetry.  (Lindsey)

I was amazed at how calculated everything was at Neruda’s house. He built his house in the shape of a boat – wider in the middle, narrower at the ends.  The doors were low and staircases were tight, like you’d find in a ship.  He had a lot of strange collections like miniature boats in glass bottles which were placed on glass shelves in front of a window facing the ocean so that when you look at them, it looks like they are floating on the ocean.  He also had a beautiful collection of sea shells from all over the world. (Lindsey)

Afternoon

The Beach

We went to Vina del Mar for a great 3 hour seafood lunch.  I had an assortment of all kinds of sea creatures.  I had razor clams for the first time, very good bake with parmesan cheese.  We visited Valparaiso and saw the port with container yards, Gantry cranes, container ships.  We rode in a Funicular (trolley).  (Brant)
