"The India trip was more than I could have ever imagined and reaffirms the tall order that Plus maintains of fostering a life/career changing experience. I brought back new perspectives that will not only inform my business career, but every aspect of my life. Thanks for making this wonderful opportunity available to us."

It was a wonderful experience to meet with Indian companies, non-profits, and government. This will greatly enhance my career as I work with Indians and have a greater knowledge of global business. This type of trip provided a unique opportunity to meet with high level executives and hear their perspectives on a variety of global business topics.

Program Overview

Recognizing that India is playing an important role in the global economy both as a provider and consumer of goods and services, the McCombs School introduced in Spring 2004 a global business program focused on India. The program provided an overview of India’s political, economic, social and cultural aspects and their implications for doing business in India. The class was structured in two parts. The first part included a series of lectures from experts on the various issues related to India including Mr. Tayal (Consular General of India - Houston), Mr. Gurucharan Das (Author of India Unbound, and ex-CEO of P&G-India), Prof. Mahajan, Prof. Patrick Oliville, Prof. Bob Hardgrave, and others. The second part involved a 2-week (optional additional week) visit to Bangalore, New Delhi, and Mumbai where students met and discussed with executives of some of the most fascinating IT, biotechnology, consumer products, financial and services firms. The students also traveled to Hassan, Mysore, and Agra to visit some of the spectacular historical places and to experience the social and cultural side of India.

The main objectives of the program include: (a) to see first-hand the facilities, expertise, R&D and talent in an emerging field (including IT, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, logistics); (b) to develop a keen sense of global opportunities for collaboration and outsourcing/offshoring, and competition; (c) to understand possible business opportunities; (d) to gain an appreciation of the role of national history, politics, and culture on global business; and (e) to learn the rich history, diversity and the complex social fabric.
