Texas MBA at Houston Admissions Criteria
The admissions committee reviews applications on an
individual basis, looking at both quantitative and
qualitative aspects of an applicant’s professional and
academic background. In reviewing applications, the
committee seeks to assess an individual’s potential for
academic success and future professional growth. Those
candidates who appear to be most competitive for admission
will be invited to interview with the director of the MBA at
Houston program.
Characteristics of a Strong Application
Admission is competitive and like all McCombs MBA programs,
is based on a candidate’s academic record, GMAT score, work
experience, essays and interview with special attention to
test scores, GPA, personal essays, work history, letters of
recommendation, extracurricular and community activities,
honors and achievements. Characteristics that add to the
diversity of the class may also be considered, such as
background, multi-lingual skills, culture and socioeconomic
history. Admissions criteria for the Texas MBA at Houston
are equal to that of the other MBA programs offered by the
UT Austin Graduate School of Business. Prospective MBA at
Houston program candidates should have a minimum of two
years work experience since earning an undergraduate degree.
For the most current class, the typical GMAT scores fell between a
600-750 and typical upper-division undergraduate
GPA fell between 3.0 and 4.0.
The selection of candidates for the Texas MBA at Houston program is based on the following considerations:
- Does the candidate demonstrate the capacity to do outstanding academic work at the graduate level?
- Does the candidate bring significant managerial or professional experience from which his or her classmates will benefit?
- Will the candidate ultimately reach a position of greater responsibility and will Texas MBA at Houston genuinely enhance his or her career?
- Is the candidate capable of making and sustaining a two-year commitment to a rigorous MBA program?

Work Experience
MBA applicants must have a minimum of two years full-time
post-undergraduate work experience. The admissions committee
is especially interested in the professional
skills-including computer and other technical skills
applicants have developed during their careers.
Undergraduate and previous graduate achievements
MBA at
Houston has no mandatory minimum grade point average. For
admission purposes, the University calculates a GPA using
undergraduate, upper- division (junior and senior- level)
coursework and any completed graduate work. MBA at Houston
does not require prior coursework in management or business
administration. The ranking and reputation of the
applicant’s undergraduate institution may be taken into
consideration, as will extracurricular involvement during
one’s undergraduate experience.
Interviews
All applicants admitted into the MBA at Houston program will
be interviewed by the Director of the program; however, not
all applicants will be invited for an interview. An MBA at
Houston staff representative will contact applicants via
e-mail or phone to set up interview dates and times. To be
interviewed, the application must be completed as defined by
the application checklist. Incomplete applications cannot be
evaluated and may encounter processing delays that could
affect the admission decision. It is the responsibility of
each applicant to monitor the status of his/her application.
Pre–Enrollment Expectations
Prior to enrollment, applicants should possess competency in
at least three areas:
- Basic business calculus (not required but recommended)
- Computer spreadsheet applications (e.g. Lotus 1-2-3, Excel)
- The English language
Applicants whose native language is not English may be
asked to demonstrate language competency beyond the
submission of a TOEFL score.
Special Considerations
Most application materials are kept for one calendar year.
Applicants reapplying must submit new university application
forms, a new resume, essays, and the application processing
fee. Additional letters of recommendation and test scores
are not required, but may be submitted. Transcripts must be
re-submitted only if additional coursework has been taken
since the last application. International students must
obtain an updated statement of financial support.
