Behavioral Research Lab Administration Procedures and Priorities
Only McCombs
School faculty members and doctoral students are permitted to reserve the
Behavioral Research Laboratory at this time.
A reservation
request form for the Behavioral Research Laboratory can be found below.
Submitting a completed request form on-line is the first step in the
reservation process. Reservations will only be entered on the Reservation
Calendar for requests that are fully complete. If not complete, the
Behavioral Research Laboratory staff will return the request to the
requester for completion. Reservation requests will generally be
processed by the Behavioral Research Laboratory staff. If laboratory
usage issues arise that cannot be solved by individual researchers or by
following the priorities described below, they will be referred to the
Behavioral Research Laboratory Committee.
Approved
reservation requests are posted on the Reservation Calendar and can be
viewed on-line at any time. The two laboratory rooms are reserved
separately. Reservations are final only after all requirements have been
met (e.g., a complete request form has been received and IRB approval
obtained).
Submissions
of requests to use the Behavioral Research Laboratory should follow
application for approval to use human subjects.
(See
www.utexas.edu/research/rsc/humanresearch/manual/ for information and
forms relating to the human subjects approval process.)
Actual use
of the Behavioral Research Laboratory requires that a researcher has
received prior project-specific IRB approval for the use of human
subjects. Reservations are subject to cancellation if IRB approval has
not been received two weeks prior to the conduct of the research and will
be automatically cancelled if the project has not been approved one week
before the time of the reservation.
-
Research
projects take top priority over all other uses of the Behavioral
Research Laboratory.
-
Reservations
are only considered final when IRB approval has been received.
-
Reservation
requests may be submitted up to sixty (60) days in advance of the
conduct of the research, but not later than seven (7) days prior to the
proposed reservation date.
-
Requests for
non-research uses of the Behavioral Research Laboratory may be submitted
no earlier than fourteen (14) days prior to the proposed usage date, and
no later than seven (7) days before the proposed use.
-
Requests for
future usage times are cumulative from the beginning of a semester.
Conflicts in multiple researchers requesting the Behavioral Research
Laboratory at the same time are resolved on a priority basis, with prior
use being a consideration during any semester. Less frequent users will
generally be given priority over more frequent users. When prior use is
equivalent, then the first researcher to reserve and receive IRB
approval has priority.
-
When
conflicts in reservation requests occur, priority is given to projects
that require unique features of the Behavioral Research Laboratory, such
as the computer network or group video capabilities. The major question
to be asked when conflicts arise is: Could this project reasonably be
conducted in any other location in the School?
-
All
Behavioral Laboratory users must be trained on the equipment they will
be using. Please contact the Behavioral Research Laboratory staff for
training times.
-
When all
other requirements have been satisfied, it may be possible for a
researcher to reserve the Behavioral Research Laboratory on very short notice
with special approval.
Behavioral
Research Laboratory Access
At least
one principal investigator must be a McCombs School faculty member.
PhD students
are welcome and encouraged to use the Behavioral Research Laboratory.
However, their reservations must be jointly made with a McCombs School
faculty member. PhD students have the same priority as faculty members
for laboratory usage. McCombs School faculty members who expect to be
using the laboratory extensively can obtain a key from the Dean’s Office.
A temporary key can be obtained from the Behavioral Research Laboratory
staff. All users of the Behavioral Research Laboratory must have and use
an access code that is unique to them. A code can be obtained from
Mark Wimby in Computer Services (Mark.Wimby@mccombs.utexas.edu).
The faculty
member principal investigator has personal responsibility for Behavioral
Research Laboratory equipment during the approved time of use. It is the
responsibility of the faculty member principal investigator to personally
oversee student use of the laboratory as well as use of the key.
