To access the University network through a public Wireless port you must first use a laptop or device that has a wireless network card/capability and which uses the 802.b11 standard, open an internet browser application and login to the page that you are automatically directed to with your UTEID. If you have forgotten your UTEID, please visit the UT EID Self-Service Tools page for assistance.
Wireless Compatibility
The system is compatible with any wireless network card which uses the
802.b11 standard, it also offers 64 or 128 bit encryption, please
consult your manual on how to activate encryption, this is for your
security and prevents others from “listening in” to your
transmissions.
Wireless Support
We do not offer full SWAT support for wireless, but we're more than glad
to assist you on an individual basis should a problem arise. We
cannot guarantee compatibility with all manufacturers and this is
not an included service of the
COE
(UTEID login required.) To report trouble, drop by our office and we will try to remedy
your issues to the best of our abilities.
We would appreciate your feedback on our wireless service, either by going to
our Wireless feedback page or by dropping a note off at the office. We are
particularly interested in ease of connectivity and any problems you may
encounter.
Wireless Speed
Wireless is currently running at 11 MB shared, which results for all
practical purposes in a speed comparable to a DSL or Cable modem, you
may actually get much higher throughput, but depending on how many users
are currently connected to the Access Point you are using it may also go
slightly below. This is very different from being hardwired to our
network (100 MB switched), but is absolutely sufficient for checking
your mail, retrieving a forgotten document from the server, or quickly
looking something up on the Web. Please try and avoid network intensive tasks
with large data transfers.
Wireless is not a replacement for your wired connections, just an
addition which allows you to get connected anywhere instead of having to
find a port, e.g. while waiting in the hallways, having lunch in the
atrium or taking notes in class.
