Academic & Career Advising

Once you have been officially admitted to the MPA program, you are encouraged to visit the UT campus for your initial academic and career advising appointments.  Advising appointments are available beginning May 27.  An advising appointment is required prior to the first day of Orientation on August 18. If you are required to start in the summer, please schedule your initial advising appointment before summer registration on July 11.

In your initial advising appointment, you and the academic advisor will discuss your academic background and coursework to date via a review of your undergraduate transcript. You and the academic advisor will determine which MPA classes, if any, can be waived and/or substituted. Please note that it is sometimes necessary to provide the academic advisor with syllabi from your previous coursework to determine your eligibility for course waivers and/or substitutions. For more information about the classes required for your MPA degree and the requirements for waiving or substituting some of these classes, please see:

In addition, you and the academic advisor will review the MPA prerequisites to determine if you have satisfied these prior to enrolling in the MPA program. If you are unable to meet all of the prerequisites prior to beginning your MPA program of work, it is possible to take prerequisite courses at UT at the undergraduate level. However, any prerequisite courses that you take after enrolling in the MPA program are considered over and beyond the MPA degree requirements and will add to the length of your MPA program. If at all possible, you are encouraged to take the prerequisite courses prior to enrolling in the MPA program since it is believed that these prerequisites will increase your chances for success in the MPA program. For more information about the MPA prerequisites, please see:

      http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/mpa/traditional/prereqs.asp.

After the academic advising appointment you will meet with a career advisor, to discuss MPA recruiting.

To set up your initial advising appointments, please contact the MPA Program Office at MPA@mccombs.utexas.edu or (512) 471-6559.
